I'd say avoid the '08 and later, but nothing wrong with an '88. Different years had different issues and strengths. You pick the year based on what you can afford and what is available around you, Then you learn about the bike and patch up any week points, be they induced by miles run or by infliction of the year it was produced.
88 or 08 matters not, KLRs are all great bikes given the above parameters. Some things evolved over time but the basic bike is the same. I ride 1k days regularly on my 08 and you would need to be a few cards short of a deck to think the 88 was good for that out of the box. I ride often with a few guys on older KLRs. I will never be able to keep up with them in the woods since there bikes are lighter than mine plus they are less afraid to kill them since they paid much less. There is a ying and a yang in all things and KLRs are no different
The Question you should be asking is "I have an 88 with this many miles. What should I be looking out for and what improvements are worth considering?". Take every response to the second with a grain of salt because we all have opinions! If there is a tech day near you go, even if you are not ready to do anything. There is more knowledge floating around about the KLR than any other bike in the world, ummm, except the Honda cub.
Apart from that, if it says KLR on it, you have the right year bike!

If I was in your shoes, I would invest in a major maintenance interval at my most trusted shop. Ask around for who is trustworthy where you live. Let them adjust the valves, adjust the balancer, check the brakes, adjust the levers, check and adjust the clutch, check and adjust the chain (this is so simple it's something anybody can do), change the oil and filter, change the fork oil, and whatever else the Kawi manual says to do. It will cost you several hundred dollars, but it's worth it because they will give you a list of "recommended maintenance" based on what they find. Don't have them do it, just thank them and take the list. Then talk to people that are this list or whatever and do some of it yourself.
My 2 cents...
