Ticking valves aren't burning. Quiet valves are like quiet (but still awake) 3 year olds: They are up to no good. eddie

A Tappy Valve is a Happy Valve.. MAX clearance ( shim should be a thinner size ) Dooden A15 Green Ape

All right, now I am confused. If the engine spec has a minimum and a maximum why would you go for anything but the exact middle?

As the valves face/head wears, the valve stem protrudes more, causing the gap to get smaller. If you are already adjusting the valves, maximum gap will give longer intervals between adjustments. That being said, If the valves are within spec., I would not adjust them just to get to maximum allowed gap. I only adjust when they are out of spec., and then to maximum gap. Craig Kahler

Depends on what you are doing with the engine. If you are racing a Formula Vee, you might set the clearances as tight as possible for maximum lift and overlap in the very closely-regulated stock VW 1200cc engine. You will be looking at them no less frequently than every 50 miles or so, and can get away with running them a little tight. If you are setting clearances by measuring and swapping shims, a job you might not want (or need) to do as often as you might with screw-and-locknut adjusters, then you would set them at the max for the longest possible adjustment intervals. A happy side effect would be very slightly less overlap, higher combustion pressures, and higher low-end torque.

As the valves bang into the valve seats, they recess in and tighten the clearances up. Best to set them a little loose within the spec range. g
