installing progressive spring

I am in need of advice from anyone who may be experienced with installing a new spring on my old shock.
I had a new progressive spring "thrown in" when I bought my 99 KLR a few years back.I'm currently changing my chain and sprockets, while I've got my swing arm dropped I thought might as well put the heavier spring on. I have a capable press available. Could use some details on how this process is accomplished. Clymers says take it to the shop, I'd prefer to have a go at it myself. When compressing do I compress from shock clevis to clevis? Is the snap ring the retaining device? I understand this is a loaded device and caution must be exercised. What else. please

kenekiger,
Glad to see you are asking questions before you damage equipment or hurt
yourself.
You compress the spring, not the shock. At the top of the spring you'll
see the device that holds the spring in place.
The tool Martin Earl and I used when changing his spring was at a frame
shop. It's wall mounted and has three arms on the bottom and three arms
at the top. The arms have small dish shaped notches that go over the
spring coils. When the spring is secured a large screw is turned that
moves the upper and lower arms closer to each other. Once you have
released the retaining device and removed it you back the large screw on
the compressor until the spring is at full relaxed length. Then insert
the new spring and reverse the operation.
It probably takes 3 minutes with the proper tool.
I suppose you can make attachments for your press but if it's a one time
operation it might not be worth the effort. I'm guessing Midas would do
the job for a couple of bucks. They'd use the same compressor they'd use
for replacing springs on McPherson struts.
There are also shock specific compressors that are easy to build and make
but not quite so easy to describe. : )
Best of luck. Hope you can stay safe.

bark busters

I switched my bars to a Pro-Taper SE ATV Hi set last winter and added the Meier Woods-Pro bark busters from Fred at Arrowhead. Installation was a snap with a perfect fit, no bending required. I absolutely love then, and they don't get in the way at all. I especially liked them this weekend when when I tipped over into a bank while learing to ride in sand. No lever or hand damage at all.
