While I was doing my valves yesterday I decided to drill out the carbs slide vaccuum vent hole (or whatever its called) to 1/8 inch. I have heard from several others on this list that it improves acceleration. I didn't think that the small amount the 1/8 drill opened it up would make that much differance. I'm impressed. I now get full wheelies. It's a definate improvment. and doesnt cost anything except for the drill if you dont have one.

Where did you find the info on how to do that? List archives? Any sites that might have some photos and/or 'how to' info? I'm curious but also pretty carb ignorant. Do you think this mod would have a negative impact on fuel economy? Any pointers appreciated, Steve A11

Just be careful not to loop it like I did!! :) That mod and the shimmed needle sure make it easy to pull em. Ed A15 It's a definate improvment. and doesnt cost

someone awhile back posted a copy of the K+N Dyno Jet instructions. One of the improvments was to drill out the carbs slide vent to 1/8". The Dybo Jet kit costs around $60. About the only thing you get for that that you can't get elsewhere is a needle. The rest is 2 drill bits, larger jets, and instructions. The drills are free for me. the larger main jet is about $2.50. and the instructions were free. I can't find them on the files section. maybe someone has archived them on there own computer. Simple instructions. with tank off. lossen both hose clamps that hold the carb to the engine and to the air box. rotate the carb to the right side of the bike. loosen the 4 screws that hold the black plastic cover on top of the carb. remove slide. a slide w/ diaphram, spring, needle, + white plastic retainer will come out. look at the bottom of the slide. there are 2 holes the one you need to open is the one thats off center (NOT IN THE CENTER). put it back together and go. the mains jet in my opinion should be open up 2 sizes. I think thats 152 from a 148 but not sure.

While I was doing my valves yesterday I decided to drill out the carbs slide vaccuum vent hole (or whatever its called) to 1/8 inch.
OK This post confused me. Is this modification different then the the idle mixture screw modification that requires drilling the plug? The one that is 1/8 of an inch approx. deep: and then bottoming out your idle mixture screw and then opening it up 2 1/4 turns. Is this the same modification but just stated more plainly or is there the second modification that just requires drilling? And if so... can these modifications be used in conjunction with one another; and since I know what adjusting the idle mixture screw does (rich /lean) what in the heck does this other mod do? I need to know before I start giing my carb the colander effect :-). Cheers Tim

Hi, Just finished checking my valves, and performed the slide mod. I am unsure of what the shimmed needle does and how to do it. Help please. What else do I have to do with this mod. Thanks all. Darren

The shim is supose to be like a fine adjustment (i can't varifly that). You dont need to shim the stock needle. and I dont think you need to shim the dyno jet needle either, Did you put a larger jet? You shouldn't need to do anything else. I didn't put a shim on my stock needle.

Pilot Circuit screw adjustment. Gently turn in till it stops, now turn it out 1.5 ~ 1.75 turns out, that should be pretty close to good enough. No Idea on your other mods, sorry stock has worked for me. Dooden A15 Green Ape
