Toby, I'm using this combo too, if you want to check it out at the
roundup. If you want them FOR the roundup, then they should work out
fine.

Does anyone on the list have the Maier Deluxe Woods Pro hand guards
with an after market fairing? I have the Kawasaki +4 as well as the
clearview +13 fairing and was wondering if there would be
interference with the hand guards at full lock. How about with the
Acerbis hand guards?

Just mounted the acerbis units to the A14, not a bad fit, quite easy I must
say (done this lots of times on other off-road bikes). Anyhoo,
That leaves me with a pair of stock green hand, whatevers cause they sure
don't protect squat. Free if anyone wants 'em, just pay the shipping! Get
'em outa my garage before trash pickup on Thursday!

I noticed my brake lever was a little bent to day. Dropped it last
week in the woods. So I put apiece of tubing over the end and bent it
back. Looked so good I thought I would just give it a little more and
!SNAP!!! What a moron,, so now I need a new lever. I Kawasaki the only
source or does some one else make levers too?
Also ,any one have a set of stock BLUE(1993) hand guards in good shape
they want to part with? Busted one of them too it looks like.

Tom,
If you switch to a set of metal-reinforced handguards, that will be the
last brake lever you have to buy. BTW cast aluminum isn't very malleable,
and will bend usually 1 1/2 times before breaking. 1 time is when you bend
it, and then when you try and bend it back... Heat helps though, a propane
torch will just barely get it hot enough to bend without risking melting it.
I have alloy rearsets on both SR500s, and the levers are almost $60 each. I
did the exact same thing trying to straighten a crash-bent brake lever last
week.

Give me your recommendations for handguards please.
The FAQ metions only Maier. What about Acerbis do they fit?
Any advice on installation, fit, performance, looks, price?
Thanks.

I've had the Acerbis Rally-pro, and the Enduro Engineering that Mark was (maybe still is) selling. The enduro engineering are the strongest by a wide margin. The Acerbis rally-pro worked fine, but I was pulling them off the straighten them every couple weekends.
Don't get the Acerbis "rally" guards with the integral turn signals. Unlike the rally-pro they don't have a full-length metal bar inside them and will flex enough to bend or break levers.
I suggest you get alloy bars, or get the proper kit to hard mount the bar ends into steel bars. The "kits" that throw a rubber tube over the smaller diameter alloy bar end clamp don't tighten enough.

The guards I was selling (sold out) were an older
design from Enduro Eng that they don't make
anymore. The new aluminum ones at EE look
identical to the Maiers and Moose guards and the
ones from Tusk. They're probably all made by the
same Indonesian school girls.
At $21.99, the Tusk guards are a steal and only
available at
http://www.rockymountainatv.com The
Tusk wind deflectors cost more than the guards,
so just buy the bare aluminum guards and attach
your stock handguards to them for wind deflection.

Jim,
Acerbis Rally Pros with the extra spoilers on them are the ones
you want if you want Acerbis. I have them, and I like them. They do
not offer as much wind protection as the other brands or even the
stock bug deflectors. But they do have protection, and I have tested
them out a few times on "accident".

Just about any of the guards can be made to fit the KLR. Sometimes
you just have to snap off the ball-ends from the levers.
The Woodspro aluminum bars are very strong, and with a little
creativity, you can adapt the original plastic guards to go over
the aluminum. This provides excellent weather protection for your
hands, as well as protection for the brake/clutch levers.
Acerbis offers plastic as well as aluminum handguards.
The Acerbius are more expensive, and IMHO offer less weather
protection. This can be a big reason for choosing one over the
other, especially if you ride in cold, rainy, snowy weather.
I have the Acerbis Rally all plastic guards on one of my KLRs and
the WoodsPro guards on another. For me, the plastic guards seem to
contribute less to handlebar vibration.
Aluminum guards such as the WoodsPro are usually $40+, and the
plastic covers another $15-30.
The Acerbis are usually $60-80 plus anoth $25-30 for covers.
Acerbis also make an Enduro series with built in turn signals, but
they seemed kinda cheap to me. Besides, after your 3rd or 4th set
replacement of signals, you should probably change to the
LockartPhillips units for $12 a pair.
