About 10 years ago I bought 2 rare earth magnets for about $15 each which were supposed to change lights. They attached to the bottom of the frame and changed lights both quickly and supposedly. They were an absolute failure on both counts. If a car had not come along, I would have starved to death at that intersection. I expect that this is another re-incarnation of the same idea, and it will arise again in another 10 years as well. DC nakedwaterskier wrote:

Did you ever notice the skeletons of bikers still sitting at traffic signals, waiting an eternity for the light to change? ...Which reminds me of an old joke: If so many cats get stuck in trees and the fire departments don't get them down, why don't we see cat skeletons in the trees after the leaves fall? I have, on more than a few occasions, hopped off the bike, dashed over to the "push to cross" button and then back to the bike. Even more frequently, I have stopped, waited a while, then proceeded carefully through the red light. Once was in full view of a police officer parked down the block. I wasn't pulled over. If one actually owned and used a device that would take command of the Opticom systems on intersections, I'm sure it would be illegal. Other systems may be used in other areas of the country but at least in central Iowa most are Opticom systems. Google Opticom for more information. Round these here parts they have magnetic sensors at intersections, in addition to the Optical whatevers, easy to spot as the intersections have a square with beveled corners cut and sealed in the area where a vehicle would be stopped waiting for a light. Basically the metallic mass of a normal car/truck signals the traffic light control there is a vehicle waiting, otherwise signal stays green for the main throughfare road. Somebody ought to package them up in a kit together with some deer whistles and a Swarup. It would make a great Father's Day gift!

I had access to low-cost epoxy coated 'cow magnets' and had a total of 8 configured on two axies between the footpegs. Guess what? The red light stayed red. But I was surprized by the amount of small metal fagments these magnets collected out of the 'road-wash' under the bike. Eventually took them off. I still get puzzled looks from car drivers behind me when I motion to them to pull forward to trip the light. Seems like they don't understand how the light trigger works. More than once, I've seen a long row of cars sitting at a light because the lead car is sitting 10'-15' back from the hexagonal 'tar snakes'. In Virginia, I believe there is a law that allows motorcycles to cautiously proceed through a red light if the sensor does not pick up the presence of a motorcycle. I just searched the Code of Virginia a bit but could not find the exact paragraph. I found the law that discusses proceeding through an intersection when the traffic light is malfunctioning, so that might be what I am thinking of. I wonder if the judge would agree that not triggering the sensor is "malfunctioning"? I did find this law, though: Code of Virginia 46.2-911.1. Operation of motor-driven cycles on public highways prohibited. No person shall operate a motor-driven cycle on or over any public highway in the Commonwealth.
