The other day I rolled my '01 with 61K miles into the driveway, turned
the key, saw the green light and hit the starter. It made a slight
noise, I think, then the green light went out, and nothing. No
headlight, nothing. So I assumed a electrical short, pulled the four
year old Yuassa and looked over the wiring.
The wires looked fine so I cleaned the started and kill switches and
waited for the battery to charge. Next I prepared to reconnect the
battery but decided to check the voltage and amperage. Now I suspect
the battery has shorted out as the voltage drops from 12 to 9 while on
the multimeter.
Now to my question can I continue to diagnose this issue by using a
car battery to roll the starter over?
Will the increased amperage of a car battery harm the electrics on my
KLR? Or should I just wait and order another battery and try it then?

The way to diagnos starter / battery problems is as follows:
1 measure battery voltage at terminals with key off
If under 12 volts you are already marginal
2 measure battery voltage with key on and lights on
If under 11 volts marginal again
3 crank starter
if no starter and voltage goes below 9 volts while trying to start
Then battery bad
if battery stays above 9VDC then something in starter circuit

Forgot to add , never use car battery
If any wiring / winding shorts in your system you could burn lots of
the wiring harness out
Very extensive to replace

Jim,
Sounds like a bad battery since it's below 12.65 volts after charging.
You won't hurt anything by using a car battery that is fully charged.
The system will only take the juice it needs for the application.

While you are waiting, you could whip up something out of plastic detergent jugs that works
even better.
