Probably an old and tired subject for many, but will a 16-tooth sprocket fit my A15 without modification (other than chain length), and who makes one? Regards, Vernon Cooke 97 GL1500 01 KLR

Hello Vernon,   The 16T will fit without any modifications.  The stock chain will work as well, just have to readjust it.  I have the 16T in stock if you need one.  They are $19.60   Fred www.arrowheadmotorsports.com

Listers, Have any of you had any clearance problems when mounting a 16 tooth sprocket on your KLR's. I just got one for my KLX, and I suspect that there may be some clearance problems between the chain, and the sprocket cover/guard, or the front guard mounting bolt boss. All input appreciated. It shouldn't be anything a hand-held grinder can't fix. Try putting some crayon on the chain links (about ten of them, just before they disappear into the sprocket cover) and then hold the sprocket cover on lightly while turning the rear wheel, to get a mark on where you have to grind. It shouldn't be much to take off.

I just put on my 16 tooth last week , besides the sparks flying out of the cover, It's great !! No problems on a KLR650 A14.

Where can I find a 16 tooth countershaft sprocket in Canada? My local Kawasaki dealer searched all his aftermarket sources and could not find one. Any suggestions? Adam A14

One of the KLR650 FAQ sites lists the 16 tooth (front) sprocket as a no-no due to stress on the engine and drivetrain. After a season of riding the KLR mostly on the road, I'm thinking of going with the 16 tooth sprocket next year to lower revs and make road riding more pleasant. Anyone have experience/thoughts on this?

I think perhaps the KLR650 FAQ site overstates the case, but I have tried the 16t on the road, and for the most part, don't like it. Its only advantage is slightly more relaxed running at highway speed. It degrades around-town, off-road, and top gear roll-on performance. It does nothing for fuel economy. I would only use it for a long road trip, which for me means luggage and camping gear. With a touring/camping load, my bike doesn't begin to pull its redline on stock gearing, much less with a taller gear. Reconfigure the bike a little, with street tires and short bars, and it may be a different story.
