who wants to drive their klr at 55 mph?
The idea of reinstalling the 55 mph speed limit is being wagged in
our face again - God forbid:
I sent an email last week to Senators John Warner and Kay Bailey
Hutchison protesting the idea of reinstalling the 55 mph speed limit
to save gasoline. 55 might work for an itty bitty state like
Virginia, New Jersey, Rhode island etc. but just try and drive from
Dallas to Corpus or Longview to El Paso at 55. It is ridiculous
especially out west. I might could live with 65 as I notice my
Suburban does much better at 65 on cruise and it doesn't feel as much
like I am walking as 55 does. But the whole thing is WE DO MOST OF
OUR DRIVING IN CITY where the speed limit is already 60 mph. And the
city is where all the gas is used, not on an occasional trip to
Corpus or El Paso. Jackrabbit starts and constant up and down on the
accelerator pedal is also where gas is wasted. I will be the first to
buy a radar detector and break this ridiculous speed if it is
reinstalled. It will just be a money generator for small town police
forces. Not many will follow it as happened the last time it was in
force. By the way, you may already drive 55 mph if you want to save
gas if you want to watch your tail lights smash into your seat back.

I remember the national 55 mph speed limit very well. Back in 1974 when
it went into effect, cars and pickups did not have overdrive
transmissions and were not as aerodynamic. Nowadays, most cars will get
better gas mileage at 65.
The main thing that the national speed limit did was teach everyone in
the country that it is acceptable to violate the speed limit.

Hi Ron! We need to go get a burger sometime.. A 55mph speed limit would make it much easier for municipalities to decrease budgetary short comings. I'm with you. If a driver or rider wants to drive 55mph on the highway I say go for it. As long as drivers are driving safely, I could really care less how they do it. Yeah, I remember it well, too. It sure did make a big revenue income for the California Highway Patrol, though. Big bux came flowing in from people like me. If I remember right, the Feds got in on it by requiring a certain amount of the revenue to be shunted to them. I guess it worked well for the Federales because, some years later, they required the states to send the major part of all the funds collected from tickets to them. Of course, they would give it back in the form of money for highway repairs and so forth. You believe that happened, don't you?

Hi Ron, I actually heard a rather interesting "rant' on the local rock channel on my drive to work. I never heard the original part but apparently there was a news or tv blurb saying we should slow down to conserve gas. The guy that called apparently was a salesman who travels from Halifax to I believe Sydney (Nova Scotia), probably at a guess about +400km's with a posted speed most of the way at 110kph. Anyway to get back to it he apparently tried it at 90kph all the way and I believe he said 120kph, the normal speed of travel and repeated several times to try to get repeatability. I can't remember what he quoted for mileage but he claimed he got 5 miles per gallon at 120..have a great day...Greg

Surely you understand the 55mph speed limit was NOT about
saving fuel. And it wasn't about saving lives either. It
wasn't back then and it won't be next time.
Bob, who doesn't want to drive anything as slow as 55 on the
interstate highway system.

I agree. Love changing my tires in the early morning before it gets hot out. When I stop for a beer, the riding and work are done for the day also.> > Ha.
