battery problems

I noticed my KLR-650 getting hard to start today. It has 4k on the odometer. Pulled the battery out and it did not have one drop of liquid in it. I filled it up and charged it and all seems well. However, I'm concerned that the system is over charging the battery. Why else would it be completely dry? Should I take it in to the shop to get it checked, or is this rather normal?

Did you yourself verify the battery fluids initially?
Is it real hot where you live? What did you fill it up with?
I would check the fluid levels in 2 weeks time, then in two more
weeks,then monthly. It may be beyond being able to keep a charge so go
with a sealed battery when it's time to replace it.

This is common with all KLR's. You need to check the water every 1000 smiles or do like most of us and get a good maintance free battery. There are many to choice from. I changed mine almost two years ago and have had zero problems from the new one. The stock battery requires too much attention for me.

All batteries with fill ports require water now and then. A motorcycle battery is just about
the worst though. Small battery tasked with starting a relatively large motor with usually
undersized wires that add to the problem. not to mention the location, Under the seat,
well insulated... from cooling air that would keep it alive longer. Once the battery is hot it
stays hot for some time. the charging system is pushing a we bit more juice then the
battery needs adding to the loose of fluid.
but as Hines noted get a maintenance free battery and forget about it.

Start pricing new batteries my opinion
I bought a sealed battery, since it will not leak when the bike is on
its side.
To each there own, yours might go for years or be dead in the morning.
Filled it with ? tap water, acid, distilled water ?

Thanks for the advise. It is a bit of a pain, especially with a Corban seat, to pull out the battery, add water and replace it. The next time it comes out it will be replaced with another battery - probably gel, but not sure on that. I use a gel battery on my Landcruiser. One went out a few years ago, and when that happens with a gel you can't even jump it. So, maybe there is a better choice.

One way you can jump is to attach the positive jumper cable to the *other* end of the battery positive cable, where it attaches to the starter solenoid. Access this by removing the plastic cover (one phillips screw) on the left side, below the rear of the fuel tank.
Then attach the negative jumper cable to the frame.

Install a sealed AGM battery. One of the best mods I have done. No more
leaking acid on the frame.
No more topping off the battery. AGM battery also seems to hold a charge
better.
