At 220 lbs , 5' 9" and 57 years old at the time of
purchase, I put about 4 K on Y2K KLR650 with the
stock seat. A few days in the 500 mile range.
Need to move around a lot to keep it from hurting
my tail bone but that's just the way I'm built. My
butt just don't fit stock seats, need that little
concave for tailbone clearance to be happy.
Put on a Corbin Flattop, Resolved problem. Not as
comfy as the leather corbins on my R1150GS or the
ones I had on my R11RA but okay.
Have done 722 miles in one day starting at 6AM and
getting home at 12 midnite. Doing everything from
bouncing down a tech trail in Arkansas at 5 MPH to
end running a Thunderstorm later that day on I-49
South at 80 MPH.
So, I'm pretty sold on the Corbin Flattop.

Andy,
I had the chance to sit on John Lyons corbin seat last year, very comfy
indeed. As much as I like my mayer saddle, the one advantage the corbin
had, it seemed not to be quite as wide in the forward half of the seat,
easier for my short legs to touch the ground. Don't remember if John
has the flat or dipped version. I am also 5'9 about 180 lbs with a 32
inseam. With the stock seat on the KLX I could barely flat foot at
stops, now I shift slightly to the left and put the ball of my left foot
down. Still wouldn't have another seat for long miles. Have over 12k
miles on my mayer with no regrets. Am still looking for a used seat pan
for a KLX c model to send to Rocky Mayer so he can build me a double
version for 2 up riding.

May I please hear opinions about Russell versus Mayer seats for long
distance
riding. Also does anyone know if the original seat
has to be destroyed to make the new one? I would prefer to keep the
original along with a new seat. I have read the comments about
Corbin and have personal experience so I am not interested.

Anybody have any experiance with the DS gel seat. I just gotta get
somthing better than the stock seat. Any suggestions. Corbin or gel.
Corbin goes for 249.00, anyplace cheaper or is this a standard price?

I have tried both the gel and the Corbin. I wouldn't spend the bucks on either again. Just coat the stocker with sheep skin or
Harvey Hicks from Oklahoma had a seat that looked real comfy he got from somebody in Arkansas for a bout $250. Harvey, steer
this guy in the right direction. Or people swear by Russell Day Long seats that are more expensive still.

Which one of the corbin seats is the best ,flat ,dished or platform.Pros and cons.I just installed a platform and took it for spin. I feels funny at first,but gets better when you slid back .Also its very slick.If you grab a handful of brakes you can crush the boys into the gas tank.Is there any thing that can apply to the seat for better grip.

I have the flat and like its feel, after it broke in. Do agree about
the slippage. Wouldn't mind a little more traction in that area. When
you ride double, there are those you don't mind sliding up on you and
others you had just as soon not.

Assuming you got the vinyl rather than the leather, get some GE clear
silicone caulking from your local Home Cheapo, and put a little bit in
a paper cup and dilute it with some white gas or mineral spirits until
it's nice and thin. Then take a narrow foam paint brush and "paint"
some stripes on your seat from left to right.
The reason to thin the caulk is to add some "stickiness" to your seat
without a big raised surface that your clothing can catch on and tear
the stripes off.
Disclaimer: test your solvent on a little bit of your seat first to
make sure it won't dissolve it. Your fault if that happens, not mine!
Vinyl isn't *supposed* to react with white gas or mineral spirits, but
(shrug)...

I've got a great idea. Get a piece of velcro (you know, the two part stuff) - the size depends on the size of your butamus maximus. Glue one side to the seat and the other to your riding pants. I have not tried this, but I'm very confident that it would solve the sliding and hurting the boys problem. ;- ) Of course, with that patch of velcro on your butt there will likely no longer be a need for the "boys." :- (

I have the dished model and you're right -- it's slick as hell. And to
make matters worse it's pitched forward so much that when I first sat
on it in the garage I slid forward up to the tank. To deal with the
"slick factor" I bought one of those ATV seat covers at WallyWorld and
just attached it over the Corbin with the provided straps. That gives
my ass some grip, but the seat is still pitched forward too much for
comfort so I'm next going to glue some foam under the front of the
seat cover to build it up enough to create a level surface.
To tell the truth, though, I'm less concerned about the seating
arrangements on the KLR than my other bikes because I don't consider
it an all-day-riding bike for other reasons (vibration, lack of power,
etc.).
