I have been looking around for a used KLR and now have several to check
out. I am pretty confident with what to look/watch out for. What I would
like to know is the range of values are acceptable or are in within spec
for a compression test? I have searched the archives first but came up dry.
thanks

After reading this FAQ:
http://www.bigcee.com/klr650faq.html#links
I realized that doing a compression test may be misleading as the
automatic compression release will cause a low reading. So, how is a
real and accurate compression test done on the KLR's ??

Pull the valve cover and disable the KACR. then make your test.

....as long as you've got the valve cover off, you might as well adjust the
valves. ;~)

Why not just buy or make the proper tool?
http://www.xs11.com/tips/misc/misc3.shtml
It's called a leak down tester.
I purchased one off of e-bay for less then $40.

I posted a drawing and complete instructions on how to build and use a leak down tester in
the files section.

Hey guys,
I am selling my KLR and the out-of-town buyer wants me to do a
compression test. I have the meter to do the test but read that the
bike has an automatic compression release system that keeps one of the
valves open under 600 RPM.
Is there any way I can get an accurate number on the compression test?
I'm in a hurry to make the sale and want to do it in the morning
before I bring it to the shop for the safety. PLease email me
directly if you have a solution.
Thanks in advance.

Not *that* quick, but if you take off the valve cover, you should
be able to wire the KACR in the running position.

On my '08, 80mph indicated would yield right about 5,200rpm. Maybe 5,300rpm.
FWIW.

I assumed I have stock 15/43 gearing and the original well-worn chain and
sprockets. Will have to count teeth now to be sure, because 5200 rpm would
be nowhere near an indicated 80mph on my speedo.

I have had mine up to close to 100 mph (indicated on the speedo) and cruise
all the time at 80 mph (indicated - about 5200 RPM)) but it isn't
overwhelming in passing especially at high altitudes. Are you running stock
15 tooth on the front and - I forget what's on the rear.
