front tire wear

Post by dnmwilhite@earthlink.net » Thu Nov 29, 2001 12:01 pm

I was checking out my tires today, and I noticed that on the front tire it looks like the tread is wearing unevenly. It appears that every other stud alternately is getting worn. Is there some phenomenon that causes this? Is there an adjustment or rebalancing of the tire that can be done to alleviate this? I also have noticed that the front end seems to have a slight 'hopping/bobbing' motion when going about 35-40 mph. I have the stock tire still on the front with about 7000 miles on it. Later

I had the same poblem with my front tire. I think it happens when you do a lot of heavy braking with the front. The knobs fold over and wear unevenly durng a hard stop. My steering was wobbly too. Tightening the stem bearings helped but the new front tire cured it totally. Brad

Just read a post about tire wear that I have observed with my OEM Dunlop. Center knobs look good (relatively), with ones to each side wearing faster, at an angle with more rubber loss toward center. This baffled me for some time then it occured to me most front tire wear is probably during turning and when braking. Often this happens at the same time,(braking/turning) and would affect the knobs just to the sides of the center knobs more than the center ones. My OEM front tire has 8.7K miles, how does that compare to others who have ridden the Dunlops until worn out. --Jim

I dont know how many miles my stock front has on it. Maybe 12,000. the knobs are worn to the skin on one side and still have about 3/16 of an inch on the other. This is caused by "toe" wear. thats because your front wheel is turned in the opposite direction that the bike is turning -> countersteering. in other words, its normal

Every knobby front tire I've had on the KLR, including the "semi-knobby" originals and the trailmax copies I've used wear out on the sides first, leaving a saw-tooth ridge in the middle. I always just thought it was part of running a dirt tire on the road. BEAN

I always have the knobs wear from braking- evenly on both sides and the middle, but they start wearing at an angle front-to-back. Except for MT-21s which don't wear the center single knob much, but the middle double knobs wear out very quickly. Devon ceb wrote:

The front tire on my KLR, the Kenda 270, is wearing really wierd. The side lugs are like new but the center ones are about down to the core. They are wearing from back to front so each is a peak, tall in the back and short in front rather than wearing evenly. It also howls like a banshee. I ride strictly on-road, corner pretty hard and brake mostly with the front. I have about 5000 miles on the tire. Is this normal or what?

Mine wore that way in fewer miles. I think this is typical. From the description of your riding the K270 is a less than ideal choice for you. Check out [www.mindspring.com/~mssilverstein/motor ... r650/tires] for alternatives. Mike A18

Pretty sure that's from hard front braking. Lower front tire pressure may aggravate it also. Rod --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "Mike Peplinski" wrote:
