flywheel rotor compatibility?

I am fixing a 05 KLR for a friend who won't go back to the Dealer. He had trouble getting the Rotor off to do the Doohickey change and took it to the Dealer who I think damaged the Rotor. Had a lot of vibration when he started it up but dealer claims the Rotor is not the problem. Have a used 1995 Rotor and would like to know if I could try it without any damage to the electrics. In 96 they went to a higher output so the 95 has a different part no. but the dimensions are the same. The only difference is the width of the magnets in the Rotor which I assume is how they increased the electrical output but as far as clearances there should be no problem. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
