I finally got my torsion spring in and the bike back buttoned up. Didn't do much if anything for my weird vibration - so I tore it down again to verify the bike was at TDC and the chain was in sync. (I'm getting really good at tearing the bike apart BTW) :) I took some pics here: http://picasaweb.google.com/thecrumb/BalancerChain02 Cam lobes out, lines on cam sprockets aligned with heads, arrow pointing to the front - and the silver links on the balancer chain align with the marks on the sprockets... So unless someone points out something really dumb I've missed - can I assume the balancer assembly is correct? Thanks! -- Jim Priest - central NC - 04 KLR650 'Gonzo'

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> Jim, I took a quick look. I'm sure you know this but the way I read your comments combined with the pictures... The balancer system and the valve system are only connected by the same crank shaft. The balancer uses the crank shaft, front balance shaft (which also drives the water pump) and the rear balancer shaft. That takes one chain which is tensioned by the doohickey. The valve train uses the crank shaft and two cam shafts (intake at rear of engine and exhaust at front of engine) driven by a cam chain and the automatic chain tensioner is on the left rear side of the cylinder. So the balancer chain has some silver links that must align with the crankshaft and the balancer shafts (plural) about one in every 9 revolutions of the crank shaft. I see the front balancer shaft in the picture with two silver links. I don't see the silver links at the crankshaft or the rear balancer shaft. For the cams to be in time the crank needs to be in the correct position and the piston on the correct stroke. I can't tell from the pictures if that is spot on or not. What I see in the picture of the cam shafts with the arrows looks good. (You explained why they weren't spot on.) I don't think this is telling you anything you don't already know. : ) Sorry I can't shed light on something. I don't remember what work you did (if any) right before the vibration started. Can you please remind me? Best, Jeff Saline ABC # 4412 South Dakota Airmarshal Airheads Beemer Club www.airheads.org The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650, 79 R100RT

I was lazy and didn't want to take off the inner cover. :) I did however peek under and I can verify the top appears to be in sync as well with the two silver links.

Guess it was 3 weeks ago now - bike was running great. Did a simple oil and filter change and decided that now would be a good time to adjust the doohicky. Riding to work the next week - I noticed the vibes in the pegs (esp. the right one) my foot actually was asleep when I got to work!! I've since installed the torsion spring and this weekend I popped on a new chain and sprockets (while lubing the swingarm). This weekend I'm going to check my engine bolts to see if they are stretched... It's just frustrating because the weather these last few weeks has been way too good to have the bike apart!! :) Thanks! Jim

Jim, Another place to look for vibration: What condition were your chain/sprockets before you replaced them? As my last (OEM) chain 'died', vibration increased. When I got the OEM chain off (grinding off the rivet) I almost had to laugh at how tight the chain had become. I think it would stick straight out 10- 12 links. Yikes. That is 'too tight' or was it 'too cheap'? Also from previous post, I did not see that you checked all the engine bolts/torque, to include the 'top' engine mounting bolt, only visible with the gas tank off. Just a thought. Cross referencing vibration to the aviation experience: It can sometimes be 'sudden' onset, sometimes it is increasing all along, but 'suddenly' you realize it is there, and has been steadily increasing until you notice something is wrong, or parts are falling off (which is very bad for flying machines and motorcycles). One thing for sure, it rarely goes away without corrective action...as you well know. smile. Has anybody else ridden your bike to 'compare' the amount of vibration you are experiencing? and lastly: Are there any physiological changes in 'Jim' that might make you more sensitive to vibration? Just some thoughts. What ever it is: Hope you find it. revmaaatin.
