2008 klr650 bad rear shock

Post by johnras12345 » Fri Aug 24, 2007 8:45 am

The rear shock preload will not adjust on my 2008 KLR. When I turn the adjustment bolt, I get a soft click and no change in the preload. I took it to a Portland, Oregon dealer yesterday. The mechanic told me that mine was the third 2008 KLR with that problem at that dealership. If you have a 2008, and have not adjusted the rear shock preload, give it a try. John

John, It seems like this is a widespread thing. On one of the other KLR650 forums, it seems like the failure rate for the 2008 rear shock adjuster is close to 100%. I know this is anecdotal - sorry 'bout that! One of the guys there says the parts are back ordered, with nothing to see in the pipeline. all the best, Mike

Do we know if the parts needed are small bits or full shock replacement? And if small bits only, is it something the backyard KLR mechanic can easily fix or do they need to trust the dealer to do it? -- Doug Herr doug@... A16 in Oakland, California

Doug, The parts fiche on www.buykawasaki.com only shows the entire shock assembly for the 2008 model. On the older bikes the preload adjuster is shown as a separate part. I've not pulled a 2008 shock to look at one. all the best, Mike

Today, not only did my new Darien Light jacket arrive but, also the new Wolfman Explorer tank bag and straps came. Darien ordered 6 weeks ago, Wolfman ordered on Monday of this week. Aerostitch, 4 days to Alaska, on in stock items. Pelican 1550's on Happy Trails SU rack with HT attachment kit great to install, including tail light re-location, maybe 30 seconds to detach each case, seem to be super solid. Another oil dissection/disertation, and a pissing match, how can today get any better??? (funny how there are about 20 posts criticizing the pissing match for each post of the pissing match. Anybody for a good gun discussion??) Monte (enjoying a bottle of Don Julio 1942 and watching 4 cruise ships leave town) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
