Hi all, I bought a second hand 87 KLR with 25,000 miles on it. The first thing I did was order the complete balancer lever upgrade kit from Eagle Mfg, when it arrived I opened the bike I found that: 1. The original lever (doohickey) was holding fine 2. The tensioner spring was broken and missing, can't see it, I have no idea where it went. 3. The balancer sprockets had small pieces of rubber missing (about 10-20% of the total rubber around the edges) 4. The one balancer weight I could pull out had small nicks on 2 of its 4 legs. You can see images of all the above in the photos section, folder "pain in spain" I need someone with some experience to please take a look and answer the following questions. 1. What happened to the missing spring? I've changed the oil twice since I bought the bike, ridden it for about 100 miles, could the pieces have fallen out with the oil (do loose springs tend to get torn to pieces?) or are they still inside the case in one big piece? How do I check? How do I get them out? 2. The damage to balancer sprockets and weights is pretty small, as you can see from the picts, a little missing rubber in the sprockets, small nicks on the balancer weights, everything else (guides etc) looks ok. Do the balancer sprockets and weights need immediate replacement? or would they hold OK a few months longer if I just install the upgraded lever and spring? I was thinking of having the piston and rings replaced in another few thousand miles, would it be ok to wait until then to do everything? or should I replace balancer sprockets and weights with the new (post 96) balancer assemblys asap? how bad is to run the engine with some missing rubber an some chipping in the balancer assembly? ...In case you didn't notice i am a bit weary of having to time the engine myself. Last time I tried I failed (know any good howto guides for that out there?) Many thanks Jero. madrid, spain
