I remember once some years ago seeing some stats about this. +1 about wearing gloves Jeff, I can't believe how many people I see riding without gloves, all it takes is a simple low speed tumble and the hands become a bloody mess. On the subject of tankslappers, I can state from personal experience of a high speed (120mph, not on a KLR!) front tyre deflation that a burst of accelleration to unload the front end will usually calm things down enough to regain control. In that situation I then carried on slowing to a stop using the rear brake and engine braking only, again so as not to load up the front too much. With a flat front tyre there is no point in trying to use the front brake, it only makes things worse. Steering inputs via the bars are not very effective either, I found that the bike wanted to go left if I steered right and vice versa because of the tyre and rim having only minimal contact, so I used weight shift only to get to the side of the road. Whenever the front started flapping around again I gave another short burst of accelleration and eventually made it to a stop without dropping it. Interestingly, the deflation was not a puncture, it was caused by a weak tyre valve spring of all things. I had inadvertently left the valve cap off and when I got up to high speed the centrifugal force of wheel rotation had lifted the valve from its seat. Guess who always checks his tyre valve caps are in place now! Sorry to be so wordy, but I hope my experience may save somebody's a$$ one day. Cheers, Allen

Right, the only way to prevent theft is to eat it. The latest gimmick here is that two guys on a motorcycle drive up next to you, pull out a gun, and tell you to stop, and get lost very rapido, and then one of the guys drives off with your prized possession. I fancy some high tech solution, with a radio transponder chip, so you and the law would be able to locate it. But then the hoodlums will come up with another solution. So, bang it up plenty, don t wash it, make it look bad, perhaps they don t want it. That s how I try to avoid adultery too, I look all banged up in a cheap outfit, but it still takes a firm NO! at times. A gold chain and a Rolex is not the way to get around here.
