I consistantly get 6 to 7 mph faster readings on the speedo over the
GPS I run on my KLR. It's the most off speedo of the bikes I've run the
GPS on. Others were '95 R11GSA @ 5 mph high : '97 R11RA @ 5mph high
and '96 & '97 DR350SE's at 5 to 6 mph high.
As for top end speed on my KLR, I've never really let it run out on the
top. But in playing about, the tattle tale computer readings on my GPS
have me at max speed of 86 mph. Don't know what the speedo was reading
as I was passing a few cars on a downhill run in Arkansas at this time
and needed to brake down for an avertized 35 mph curve pretty quick.
That was the only time I remember running that fast on this particular
trip.

Is it possible to calibrate the speedo on my KLR? Surely someone has tried
this since all of them are apparently off by 10% or so. The little gears in
the gizmo on the front wheel doesn't look that hard to reproduce.

There are a number of places that will calibrate BMW speedos. I
don't know why they couldn't also do a Kawasaki one. The only
place whose name I recall is Palo Alto Speedometer. Can't hurt
to ask.

If you need an accurate speed reading, $23 for a Sigma bicycle
speedometer is also an option (
www.aerostitch.com sells one with the
longer wire for the sensor to reach the front wheel.)

I'm setting up my (new to me) A18 KLR. The speedo sure seems off, so I grab the GPS and spend a few minutes really trying to be accurate. After a few minutes of testing, I run the numbers at the various test speeds and find that the speedo reads a whopping average 7.5% too fast. Helloooo, quality!
I'm sure it's not a big deal to a lot of people but I find that pretty excessive, and based on the KLR FAQ's and sites, this is a pretty common error. When my cars do this, I simply buy another $6 plastic tranny gear with a different tooth count to get the ratio right. But here, I assume I'm stuck, and that's just the way it is, right? I wasn't sure if anyone ever tackled recalibrating the speedo spring (because the odo, surprisingly, is almost dead on as-is)... or if everyone simply blows it off.

the speedo is off but the odomater is correct. as you have found out.
I think this is normal so people wont speed on the bike. most people
on bikes go over the speed limit anyways. I just jigure the speedo is
5 mph off

I've never owned a motorcycle that did not have a similar degree of error
in the speedometer.

I said screw it, I'm leaving it the way it is. But I always try to
look at the good in things, and so I realize that this little flaw is
just to help me stay away from MORE tickets. When I'm tooling down
the road at 70 (in a 50) it calms me to look down and see my needle
so high in the digits when I'm actually only doing 65.
Being one that has been pulled over around 35 times, and have
received about 25 tickets over the last 22 years, I can appreciate
that.

I guess I just blew it off. As the front tire wares it will get
worse.I don't know about our friends in the north(Canada)that use the
metric system, if theirs are closer or not.I guess that would apply
to the KLR riders across the waters too. I just use the gps when I
need accurate speed, and figure the bikes is 10% fast.

You now know its that much off, ride accordanly.
Change a front tire and check it again and see what happens.
I look at my tach more than I look at my speedo, i bet.
