What can I say...I can barely sit down, my back side hurts so bad.
What's wrong with the seat? Can anyone recomend a good aftermarket
seat? Besides the bad seat and damaging my hearing from the sound of
wind against my helmet...they need bigger windsheilds too, it's a
good bike. This was my first time on the highway and this bike is
not what I expected it to be. I didn't expect hyway riding to be so
tiring either. I expected the bike to be a street legal but heavy
off roader. I had it in the bush, never road a goldwing before but
that's what it felt like. A goldwing in the bush. Although I didn't
buy it for it's dirt bike characteristics. Congrats to you guys that
ride em as dirt bikes, wow!. Absolutely no simularities to my KX
250. I expected it to scream and be maxed out at 120 km/hr. Not so.
This bike pulls! Lots of torque.I think the speedo could be out
alot. but I was doing 120-130km at 5000-5500 rpm. So much for the
recomended 4000 rpm max for the first 800 miles. 150 km/h was doable-
pinned. When I was doing 120 km/h a cop past me and freightliners
were doing the same speed. Felt like a 120-130, unless no one was
worried about fuel consumption.
No vibration, expected alot of vibration.
I would like to ride a KTM adventure 650 to compare the two can't
see how it could be better and it nearly 2x the price.
The tools suck. I expected that. They didn't supply a wrench to fit
the bolts on the oil filter cover!
The engine exhaust is quite.
Making some mods. jetting, Jardine muffler-quite insert, k & n
filter. 13 tooth in the front, possibly 42 in the back.

There will be a civilian version availible soon hopefuly. It is
planed designed and ready they are just swamped with the USMC bikes
they don't have the time to build the civilian model. Plus the
government contract is is money in the bank unlike the civilian
version. I friend of mine was on the test team for the military and
told me the bikes live up to the claim of 100 MPG if you maintain 60
mph or less above that and mpg drops off to 75 mpg average
They are slower in acceleration doulbling the zeo to sixy time.
Oh and did I mention that when I first found out about these bike I
called HDT and the msrp was quoted at $20,000

"Leak Proof" seals blow, literally. Mine lasted 2 weeks. The problem
with the Leak proof seals is that they do not contain a tensioning
spring and rely on the elasticity of rubber ribs to apply wiping
pressure against the fork.
Stock is the way to go. I have the original stock seals in my 1990
Tengai with 55,000 miles.

My carry is a Colt OM just slicked up. That way the fairings don't crack.
I guess all the tire widths are standard. I'd like a wider footprint
without getting a flat or spoking up a new rim.

I just got home last nite from 5 days on my klr, completing the last
600+ miles in one day. My journey took me from san diego to yuma to
parker AZ to page AZ to Grand staircase escalante national park to
bryce canyon national park to zion national park to las vegas nv to
laughlin nv to lake havasu az and then back to san diego with alot of
stops and side trips (some dirt trails) along the way. My impressions
of my bike after owning it only 4 weeks, what a machine. The few
issues I had were: you need front foot rests, carry baby wipes for
your visor, the seat can get to you, my new mefo german (expensive
rear tire) has started separatin at the lugs, the stock front tire is
cupped but still has 50% life, didnt use any oil, need to change
front springs, rear shock is fine and I weigh 280, with bags and load
of souvenirs I totalled at least 375 lbs of load on the bike. My
overall impression of the machine is awesome! I found that passing or
following frucks on the freeway (sometimes at 100+mph az speed limit
is 75mph) feels like you are taking your life in your own hands, the
bike is at about 6500 rpm at 90 mph you cant run at this speed long
without heat developing, I was riding in 100 degree temperatures in
the desert. I hope some of this info is beneficial for someone
considering a roadtrip. I still feel as though I could have rode
another week even with all the little things that I need to change.

I would argue the best fix is the Utah Sports Skidplate. John Biccum runs one. It runs up high enough to protect the water pump. So you get chassis/engine protection, plus the water pump protection in one shot.

Hi All, I've got some chain descisions to make. My stock chain
developed a wicked tight spot and I traded it out for a heavy duty non
o-ring chain on the road. I've been looking at KLR.com's chain and
sprocket set which seems a little to good to be true. How crappy is the
chain and the sprockets? Does anyone have any experience with the
chain? I could also wait and leave the non-Oring chain on and run it
around 6,000 km to finish out the trip,

I am looking at putting panniers on mine too. I have thought about
both models in the 7.5" width. I am leaning towards the Owyhee but
have not made up my mind yet. I have read a few horror stories about
peolple breaking their legs so I am looking for something that will
give me more clearance. I want to be able to keep the panniers on all
the time and I do a bit of off road riding. There is a little leeway
in how the panniers are mounted but there are some limits based on the
turn signals. I think the Tetons would be about level with the
passenger pegs and 5-6 inches farther back. The Owyhee could be
mounted so it is 1 inch higher and 2 inches farther back. I think it
would be more comfortable for the passenger and as I said before,
better clearance. Of course, you give up some space with these so if
you are going to do a lot of overnight trips that might be a big deal.
Note: one of the reps at HT told me that either could be mounted in the
neutral position or back just a little bit. If you mount them a little
farther back you can switch the left and right pannier any time you
want and then they will actually be a little farther forward (then
neutral). I was thinking about keeping mine in the farther back
position for normal use. If I was going to go on a trip I would
reverse them so I could get more weight farther forward.

I finally got up and running today after charging the battery for only
about an hour or so on a 2 amp charge.
I did however check the fluid level in all 6 cells and 3 were very low.
I wouldn't think I would have had to fill them after just having the
bike in for its 3000m service and oil chsnge.
I wonder if the low fluid levels were the culprit. Would low levels
cause the battery not to hold a charge ?
Anyway it seems to start fine and I'll see what happens after parking
it overnight.

I was beginning to wonder if I was still on the right group..No mention of
that new concealed carry magnetic quick-draw eh? Having worked in the

Mike Jacobs Black Forest, Colorado. He ridea s KLR and a Concourse. Someone in this group asked the question and I went to his site and read the about the trip.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW HIS SOUTH AMERICA TRIP TURNED OUT? His trip down & back was interrupted by transmission failure on his KLR. He made it back as Miami on March 24, 2007. His site does not said if the KLR arrived at the airport and he rode home safely.
He writes a good long trip story with interesting comments on border crossings, the people who offered him lodgting, and a cruise to Antarctic.. The trip started 12/2005 and lasted 159 days. He returned to Brazil with parts in March of 2007, rebuild the transmision and was in the Miami airport on May 24, 2007 waiting on the KLR. His site is

When during one of our most intimate moments, my
KLR650 engine confessed to me, that she feels most
happy around 4500 revs or so, she doesn t like to run
at high revs for extended periods too much. So if
you want to catch a roadrunner on one of those long,
straight smooth roads, you should get a heavier
engine, with a lower point of gravity, so you can
comfortably hit that 90-100 mark. This bike starts
to feel just a bit out of control on more than 70.
But that s just an engine talking, what do I know?
Than the Smith and Wesson 38 was very angry because
somebody called him a tool. I am a weapon, he
shouted. I tried to calm him down, saying that you
can kill with tools and stools, and he got more pissed
off, because now I compared him to furniture. So when
in doubt, listen to what things tell you, they may be
wiser than you think.
No, I am not using drugs, that s my natural state.

you cannot live without them. Unless you are
otherwise inclined. I should charge for so much wisdom.

Hi albatross,
Interesting post...and I will add/suggest, dying on a motorcycle is
highly overated--my personal experience of having 3 vehicle vs. M/C
incidents, I hope to never, ever have another. Two of three, I
was 'innoncent', unseen by the other driver. The last time, I had
some contributing 'negligence'--the officer said so. shrug.
I am blessed to be alive, and able to walk, with all my limbs. I
have some riding buddies that did not have such good fortune from
their own similar encounters. Others, that have ridden all their
life and never even had a significant spill.
We really are invisible to most of the public, and all of the deer.
