a strange sound when i accelerate.....mostly in lower gears...a

So, I have decided to finally fall into the KLR Trap. I currently have an awesome 1993 Honda Nighthawk 750, but am looking to upgrade to a different bike. I've been wanting a KLR for years, and finally went to go seriously look at some this week. I rode both a new one (08) and a older(05) one. The 05 is in great condition, and was barely ever ridden. in fact, it only has 600 miles on it. I am having a really hard time deciding which one to go with. I wil be doing a lot of commuting, but i want to go anywhere on a new bike. what are some favorite pros and cons of the two, and are there any other good comparison sites of these out there? thanks for your opinions...

New or old will do what you want. There's a ton of add-ons for the old one, but it'll take a while to figure out what will work on the new one and some changes may need to be made to the accessories to make them fit, depending on the accessory of course. The new one seems a little nicer to me--better wind protection, better (now up to middle-of-the-road quality) suspension, more juice for electrical accessories, and better lighting. However, if you can strike a good deal on the older one you'll have more money in your pocket for accessories that are immediately available. I looked at the new one today, and unless your budget is really tight, there is no way I would by a stock old KLR over the stock new KLR, unless I could get it for at least $2000.00 less. Kawi hit a home run with the new KLR. Everything that matters they fixed, or beefed up, and threw in a few surprises. I like the fact the instruments are much better, and mounted on the fairing, not the triple clamp, so they don't move when you steer. Also the way the faring wraps around the gas tank. No more of those cheesy plastic flaps. And lighting is much better all around. Modern hand gripes and bar weights. I was impressed, and why anybody would buy a new BMW F650 or DR 650, when they can have this, is just plain nuts. I'm just glad my '99 still runs so well, and has the important mods, or I would have walked out of there with a new one, and my wife would be yelling at me right now. You really need to decide on the long term when making the decision. The new one has 280 watt alternator vs 200 watt, better brakes, heavier forks, etc. If you plan to keep it long term and farkle, it then the new bike may not be more expensive. Being very conservative, the looks will take some adjustment for me but the reported better fairing (especially quieter) would sway me heavily. If you were following the KLR lists early on, the whining and gnashing of teeth over the new design was really amusing. Lots of statements made on the basis of no knowledge. It seems that the new machine is not what the nay-sayers wanted to believe. Since $ isn't that important, I'd go with the new model. Lawrence Truthfully, you ARE looking at two new bikes (might need a battery sooner on the O5 ;~D I would imagine that you could consider the warranty as an issue, but I would think the difference could be as much as $1500-2000 between the bikes. For me, that $1500 could be a 2d KLR, (10 year old KLR). shrug. Any farkle on the 2005? Are both bikes at the same dealer? See if he will give you a 6 m dealer warranty on the O5. or dealer cost discount on parts for the first XXX months. But there is something to be said for buying new, personal pride etc...but for $1500 difference, I think I could buy a whole lot of farkle and still basically have a new bike. shrug. There is little to fear of the 05 unless you can see it has been beat severely or stolen, etc. Many, many, many KLR's ridden here on the list were bought like your 05' less than 2000 miles, 2d/3d owner. I am the third owner of my 2001 A15, it came with 2505 miles, and about $500 farkle. If it goes right this summer, I will get a 2d KLR, 2004 with 1000 miles and I will be the 4th owner!?!?!?! go figure? You will either love the bike or you won't. If you buy the O5 and don't like the bike, you will/might get most of your money back...not so likely on the 08, depreciation, etc is very steep on that new MC. Let us know what you pull the trigger on. Either way, you are going to need a new toothbrush...as your big grin is going to collect a lot of bugs. revmaaatin.

Maybe cush drive is worn out, or have a small rock in there?? The reason I say this is that the big single sends power out in unvene pulses, and if the cush drive would be worn out it could possibly make that noise (metal on metal hits would sound like a ball bearing rattling in a can), however, I have never heard of one wearing out.
