to find a 1/4" torque wrench. However I must admit I'm now even more
confused. If I had to choose between a 1/4" or a 3/8", which would be
best? Again, I'm going to do the Doo and a valve adjustment and would
like to buy one or the other. Most of my metric sockets above 8mm are
3/8", so I would just as soon get the 3/8" if it will do the job.

just rec'd shipping confirmation. You rock! Even were it not for
that, your appeal for the folks of Greensburg hit me where it counts,
my pocketbook. After watching media coverage, and feeling an
emptiness and despair in the bottom of my stomach for those good
people, but not having been spurred to action, your appeal brought it
home for me. I have just made a contribution to the Red Cross.
Whether it's the Red Cross, or the Salvation Army as Blake suggests,
this is our chance to make a difference. I would invite all the
KLRista's to make whatever contribution they can, and having done so,
make a simple post, "Done" Thank you all for letting me be part of
this community.
where any KLRista is welcome to stay in my summer cottage ( a Coleman
pop up out behind my house), and any contributors to above also get a
free dinner and beverage of choice.

HI Nolo, quick look on the net locates a 20-200 in/b 1/4 drive
torque wrench at Harbour Freight Tools for under $30
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=2696
and if you check the Mark.net site common torques chart
http://www.klr650.marknet.us/torque.html
the 1/4 will cover most but not all of your needs quite nicely. That
being said I just did the doo, the valves and the oil screen with my
3/8 wrench that goes down to 5ft/bs. which just barely does the
lowest values needed. Before I repeat the valve check later in the
summer I'll buy a 1/4 wrench. In my case I have access at work to
torque wrenchs so when I checked mine at 5lb incrents against the 1/4
at work, after seeing all the postings about torque wrenchs in the
rather crude way placing one in a vice and setting both the same
values then checking to make sure they clicked at the sae time, it
was as close as feel and hearing could tell.
One other thing to consider is all of the low torque fasteners,
read easily stripped or broken are in in/lbs while my 3/8 and most
I've seen are in ft/lbs, easy conversion but one more chance to make
a mistake and at best for example covert 69 in/lbs and find the exact
setting on a ft/lb torque wrench so it's a matter of how exact you
want to be.
For my .02 cents or perhaps I should say $50 buy both, the 1/4
first if you only want one but I would buy both, used properly
they'll last forever and be cheaper then the cost or agravation of
dealing with one stripped case or cam cap hole, viewed another way
still much cheaper than paying a dealer to do the service for
you.....Have a great day....Greg
