What should I get my RPM up to or what's the best advise for a good
long wheelie?

Let's see here,first off I'll ask you the question,"Is looking cool for the 5 to 15 second duration really worth the risk of having your bike impounded and being arrested for not only wreckless driving,but also exibition of speed,unsafe lane change(asuming your a novice rider and have not yet learned to use the front tire-spin for gyro-steering).
That's just the legal aspect!
Then there is the wear and tear on the bike itself ! Use primarily street tread design for "smoother-controlabilty" during lift-off and landing. But BEWARE!!! After you're able to move through the gears smoothly(no easy feat with the 650 while on the rear tire),your front tire rotation is considerably slower than the rear and WILL catch-up to the same speed as the rear whether your ready for it or not! It can, and probably will shoot the front tire off to one side or the other, make damn sure you have plenty of room!! Don't make others pay for your idiocy!! Use steel sprockets(you'll shred the aluminum),and stock up on replacement chains and tires.And oh yea,I almost forgot,buy motor oil by the case,you'll need it along with alot of shop-towels to wipe up the puddles of oil where you park your bike.
The only mods you'll need are a decent non-restrictive slip-on exhaust,and a couple of breather holes in your air-box.On my 2005 650,if I hit the rpm's just right,it would lift the front tire up rather easily.
Now I hope these little helpful-hints about doing wheelies on the street give you second thoughts about just where you perform them.I know your'e going to do them anyway, just be careful, at this very moment it's pain-killer medication time for me just so I don't scream every time I move because of the 6 broken ribs,1 punctured lung, bruised spleen,and possible long-term lower back problems with my spine.But hey, at least I was able to run it out through 5th gear!!!
Ya' know,I've been on a bike since I was 4 yrs. old, and can't wait to get back in the saddle again, but this time I'm not going to be so careless.It will catch up to you!

My best suggestion for "How can you do a really kick ass wheelie on
the KLR 650" is to roll the KLR out from under you, and put any major
manufacturer's 250cc motocross or trail bike under you. Offroad. On
flat well-groomed dirt. While wearing full moto-x gear. These
high-strung little 200 pound beauties will lift their front tire with
a swift jerk of the throttle and bars, and when it falls on you at the
end will hurt MUCH less than a 400 pound KLR falling on you. Not that
I'd know. I've never had that happen to me. Nuh-uh. No way. Never done it.

Buy a trials bike. A trials bike is built for wheelies. It is a lot
safer to define a really sick wheelie by how slow you can go rather than
how fast. Do it in the dirt!

my best klr wreck.
I was riding in a wash in Chino Valley Arizona trying to catch a
little air, not much, going up and down the wash. I was about to
make my turn from top of the wash to speed up going down into it when
out of the blue I went flying over the handle bars scraping a huge
gouge outa my calf on the plastic just behind the gas tank and under
the seat. My dumb ass was wearing shorts. I landed after flipping
over on my ass and my bike was on it side a good ways behind me still
running.
Now you may be curious about what happened to me. I was too at the
time. I hate that feeling after a wreck where you check yourself out
and then you see blood and your heart beat goes to the max. I just
had some flesh and fat taken out of my calf and was able to stand up
and walk to the bike. It finally sputtered to a stop and then I saw
the culprit. (*&$( Barbed Wire. There was some loose barbed wire
on the ground and I happened to catch it just right under my left
fork that it jerked my handle bars and sprained my left wrist and
sent me over the top. The loop of wire that got me was not that big
and it was attached to a nearby fence. I managed to pick the bike up
myself, start it up and with me about to pass out I rode to the VA in
Prescott where they said, "you are gonna have a huge scar there" and
I said fine just gimme some pain killers LOL. Safe riding all.
