I have seen the posts in the past about kick starters on PRE-96 models, i have heard that a kick starter on a POST-96 model is not available, and if you could find all the parts that have been discontinued, there are different things that have been changed on the POST-96 klr that makes the change up impossible? What say you oh mighty klr gurus? i ask because there is a e-bay auction for a ALL years kickstarter "kit" its seems a bit pricey to me for some extra weight to add to your bike, but I want to hear it from people who have actually looked into this mod and know what they are talking about. the e-bay link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ViewItem&rd=1&item=2495749677&category=35595 tell us what the deal is. it might be nice in those extreme situations when your electric start dont work! A17 CircusBear

Lurch, You can retrofit, IF you go back to the early clutch, clutch cover, and some other parts. The kit there is NOT universal for all years. The early clutch has fewer plates. Some of the original early clutches had springs break, and lunch the engine. Elden Carl won a lawsuit against Kawasaki for the failure of a clutch in one of his bikes. Don't waste your time on this one. Come to the party this weekend, and spend your time there! All the best, Mike Eagle Mfg & Eng since 1990 San Diego, Ca

The seller showed up on KLR650.net asking for pictures of clutch baskets, which I took as a tacit admission that he doesn't know what he is talking about.

I met a guy at Fred's a couple of weeks ago from BC that had a kickstart on his 2001. He has had 4 or 5 KLR's and this kickstart came from one of his earlier ones (plus clutch). His website is www.MotorcycleExplorer.com and his e - mail is tgrenon@.... Criswell johnsondesigns2004 wrote:

I tried to convince this guy that his kit wasn't universal but now he has gone back to believing that he was right in the first place and all you need are the parts offered. He has not actually installed this kit in a post 95 bike. The kit will not work as offered! Alan Henderson A13 Iowa

I just got a kickstarter for my KLR650, and I was going to drop the electric starter and battery. Has anybody here blanked off the electric starter hole, and if so, how did you do it? Also, I thought about putting together some kickstart kits - they would probably end up going for about $150 each. Is that something anyone would be interested in?

I have kickstart on my A3, but can't imagine why one would want to ditch the electric start...... surely not "weight reduction"?? If so, what's next, a "smaller" tank? IMHO, it's not the right bike to shave weight off of.... John in WV A3 B2 1100GS _____________

You could press a plug in, or make an o-ringed one. I have the cases from an '84 KL600 that didn't come with the electric starter. I can't guarantee 100% that they are compatible, as I know there were changes made to the main cases between the KL600 and the A1. They're buried, but I could dig them out. Email me if you're interested. Regarding the kickstarter, are you suggesting putting kits together from new Kawi parts, or old stuff. I thought the kickstarter parts were no longer available. Does someone know otherwise? I have one from a 600 on my A9. I was going to put it on my A17 when I did the transmission swap, but I decided against it in favor of retaining the new style clutch basket. For the naysayers, it's really easy to kick over with the KACR. To TDC, just a little past it, and then an even kick. My KLX300 has the KACR too, and it's so easy that you can "kick" it over by hand. My Honda 450 is a different story. The only caveat with the KLR650 kickstarter is that the choke has to be in the perfect spot because it won't turn over more than once or twice per kick. The electric starter allows leeway because it cranks so many times, and I can start my A17 with or without choke fairly easily.
