throttle hanging up on me!

I've got a problem that I will be taking into the dealer to have a
look at, since I am still under warranty, but I wanted to know what
everyone on here may think it is in the mean time. The throttle
locks up at about 1/5th of the way. When I say locked, I mean it
won't go past about 1/5th of a rotation on the grip, but will go back
to idle position when it is acting up. This has happened to me about
5 times in the past 3 days. I did have the tank off to lube up all
the rubbers under the tank to keep it from squeaking, so I thought
the cable may be pinched, but I checked for looseness and it's all
good there. Tonight when it locked up on me I had a good chance to
really look at it. I stopped the bike on the side of the road and
checked the cables really good and they had plenty of give, but when
I tried to manually open the butterfly on the carb it wouldn't go
past a fifth of the way up and I could still move the exposed cables
with my finger telling me that they were not pinched up. I kept
fooling with the flap manually until it finally gave way. So, my
guess is that something in the carb itself is off just a bit, needle
or flapper I'm guessing. It's strange though, that it's only once in
a while and it's not at any particular throttle position it's doing
it in either. I do know that it almost caused me to be in a bad
situation yesterday when I was about to climb a pretty steep hill and
it locked on me for a few moments before I could twist the grip
enough to make it up the hill without stalling....whew, that was a
close call there...lol Anyway, I will be getting into the dealer to
have a look and see what they can see!

Teryls Dad,
I'm gonna bet the carb is fine and the problem is in the throttle with a
piece of plastic broken and sometimes jamming the assembly. You have two
pull cables in this set up and I think the reason you can't move the
butterfly at the carb is if the throttle assembly is jammed the cables if
properly adjusted will keep the butterfly from moving in either
direction. I bet it's as simple as removing the cover for the throttle
housing and taking a look. If you have to take the cables off I've found
it easiest to loosen them from the carb and then mess with them at the
throttle housing.
Best of luck with this and please let the list know what you learn about
it.
Best,

That's a good one!
Did you get your required A&P Check List
certifying the throttle grip housing
was installed correctly?
Seems like every new owner should
get a copy of the A&P Sheet (instructions)
with their bike so they can check the
Dealer's A&P job.
Would be great if the A&P Sheet were
posted as a PDF document. Don't know how
to do it though and my copy is a mess.

Why am I not suprised?
The number of good Kawasaki dealers can be counted on the fingers of
one hand. Well, let me be charitable. Two hands. And maybe a couple of
toes.
The rest... losers who couldn't put together the scratch for a Honda
or Harley dealership. Sigh.
The service manager at one of the local dealerships once said he'd
never heard of a broken doohickey and refused to believe it could ever
break. A week or so after that, I helped a guy change his doohickey
out. It was broken. He showed it to that service manager.
I understand that this service manager is *still* telling people he's
never heard of a broken doohickey...
Now do you understand why I do all my own wrenchin' on my bike?!

I've seen this happen twice with a big piece of gravel stuck in the
linkage on the side of the carb.
Have a poke around in there and see if a rock is jamming up the
works...

This past week, I brought my broken Doohickey (clean break, easily recognizable) in to the Dealer in Brooksville, FL.... showed it to the Service manager... He was serious when he asked me "What's that and if you want a replacement, I'll have to know the model and year"....
Told him what it was and his response "You're kidding right".....
And no evidence of Torque Wrenches in their shop......
I'll wrench my own thank you.

No kidding he never heard of a broken "doohickey" thats like giving
scientists or accountants guesstimate numbers and expecting accurate
numbers.
