dual star centerstand installation question

Post by BobR » Thu Mar 29, 2007 7:41 am

I just purchased a Dual Star centerstand off e-bay. I had read that it is a simple bolt on but when I started to install it on my 06 it didn't seem quite wide enough to mount where the pegs are. Is there some installation trick that I'm missing? After reading all the posts for/against centerstands I was on the fence and was only planning to install it for use on a long trip with minimal gravel roads. If I have to grind something or modify something I'm not as interested in using it. Great forum but the way, very active and credible. Bob [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> Bob, I've installed a few centerstands and all have been tight fits. I've used a large hammer to beat them into place over the footpeg mounts. If you are going to do stuff to your rear suspension linkage like lube needle bearings you need to remove the centerstand and loosen the engine rear mount bolt. Otherwise the frame will be too tight and if you get the suspension part out you won't get it back in. Make sure you are careful with your torque of the footpeg bolts. I seem to recall it's 18 foot pounds but haven't messed with mine in two years. I did have one strip the threads and replaced the four footpeg bolts with M10 bolts. The forum is way to active lately. : ) We're probably gonna read this 6 times in the next week. : ) Best, Jeff Saline ABC # 4412 South Dakota Airmarshal Airheads Beemer Club www.airheads.org The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650, 79 R100RT

dual star centerstand installation question

Centerstands with a fixed-dimension between the mounting plates do not allow for frame dimensional changes by mfr'r, or tolerances. Not a good design feature. If the mounting plates are not sandwiched perfectly flat between the footrest and frame brackets, the bolted joints may loosen and fail. The SW-MOTECH centerstand has floating mounting plates and avoids the fixed-dimension design flaw. Fred

dual star centerstand installation question

Thanks Jeff. I think a hammer just might work, it's so close to fitting. I'll also put some shims under the sidestand (or have my wife hold it) to keep the bike more upright when I do it. It was leaned over on the stand when I tried last night and I'm sure the side pressure didn't help much. Bob

You need to make sure they are far enough away from the muffler to stay cool. Despite what you may think, it's not much fun getting off the highway in Barstow to find that your socks and underwear are smoking, smoldering and about to burst into flames. Thanks CA Stu
