Hello all,
I am a new guy to the list.
I am in the market for a KLR 650 so I thought I would do some research
before I bought.

Hello folks - just discovered/sub'd to this list, having
recently become interested in the KLR650. Been out of mc'ing
for 20+yrs (last was a Kaw F9/350). For yrs, been thinking
will get a "cruiser" but honestly think that for my purposes
the klr might be just the ticket. I'm fascinated with the
history of durability of this thing. I understood one to have
over 50K mi on it?
Besides, this sounds like my kinda people.
I confess to being kind of a maintenance nut, & have couple ?'s:
1. Valve adj's; haven't bought a bike yet, so don't have the book,
but somewhere read to adjust the valves at 500 mi?
I hope that's just the 1st 500mi; then what, every 5000 or so?
2. Oil: many of you guys using synthetics, or just a good-quality
oil? In some mag recently, read that after the first few hundred
mi on the original oil, if you then go with a synthetic, these bikes
now will practically run forever. (I realize this question alone
may open the floodgates)

Hi Mike,
Welcome to the group.
All things get talked about here, there has been a huge oil thread, check the
archives out. I used mineral oil for the first 1,000 then switched to
Silkolene Pro4 and change every 1,000 with the filter. I don't wish to open
up that thread again. That is just what I do. I have had no problems that are
oil related and my engine runs sweetly and the transmission shifts like silk
and I don't have false neutrals. When I check the valves every thing looks
shiny bright and clean. I checked them at 500, 1000, 3000, 5000 and 10,000. I
have one inlet that went from .005 to .004. The others have not changed at
all, well maybe 1/2 a 'thou. Others will tell you different stories. Guess
its just different engines.

I use regular over-the-counter petroleum base and change it often. I base
my opinion on a series of articles in Motorcycle Consumer News. There are
so many games being played with pricing and additive packages, that it's
hard to know what your getting (paying for). My bike seems happy with the
decision.

Hello everyone. I just got a 03 klr. I live in Quito, Ecuador, the middle
of the world. I got the bike two weeks ago and I am very excited.
This saturday I took my first fall, I was going to the Cotopaxi, whichi is
the world s highest active volcanoe. Anyways, the bike fell on its left
side, and the radiator and the fan got messed up. The radiator still
works, but the plastic part of the fan got melted. The fan s engine is
working fine though, is there a way thay I can change only the plastic
fan? Please help me out, the whole part down here is about $360, and I
spent enough money when I bought the bike (7.400 us dollars).
