hard to start

Hi,
I am having problems starting my bike when cold. When I put the choke
on. It fires up then dies quikly. Then when I try to start it again it
doesn't fire up at all unless I wait a few minuites then it does the
same thing. Now I have to use starting fluid it to start it up when
cold but that works. Any ideas on the cause and how to fix it?
Thanks,
Greg

Greg,
I'm wondering what the temperature is where you're at and when trying to
start your bike.
But regardless of temp... I suggest you don't use the throttle at all
when cranking the engine and see what happens. If the throttle is opened
(even a little) when using the enricher (choke) the vacuum will be a bit
less and not as much fuel will be sucked into the engine. That is a lean
condition as the engine needs excess fuel when cold compared to at
operating temperature.
One other possibility that comes to mind is you are flooding the engine
when trying to start it. So maybe try starting without the enricher
(choke) and a closed throttle. See what happens. If it doesn't start or
want to start then maybe apply 1/4-1/3 enricher and try again. If that
doesn't make a difference apply a bit more enricher until the engine
starts or you've applied full enricher.
Once the engine starts let it run with a closed throttle for a few to 10
seconds or so. Then maybe apply just a tad of throttle to help it along.
You haven't modified the airbox or have a very dirty air filter or
aftermarket exhaust do you?
Oh, I suggest you stop with the starting fluid if possible. That's a
good way to destroy an engine. I realize you don't want to use starting
fluid. : )

Have the valves been adjusted recently? Tight valves will result in tough starting.

Yep, had a 2001 KLR250 that I put over 10,000 miles on. Great bike, and fun as hell on trails.
