timing way off

OK, you may recall that I posted about my KLR dying on the trail last weekend. Well, I got it
home and finally had some time to tear into it tonight.
So this is what I discovered, I had spark and thought that perhaps the float or the main jet or
the like was goofed in the carb. Well after taking it apart and inspecting, all is well. NUTS!
So now we are to timing. engine internals.
So I took the valve cover off and went to check timing. The motor just plain LOCKS up. After
investingating, when the piston is at TDC, the intake valves are open completely. Are these
interference motors? Anyway, what on earth did I goof up????? I have not pulled the crank
yet to see if the doohickey was blown up, but the timing is CRAZY off right now.
My next steps are going to be to set the timing correctly and then turn it over some more. If
it turns over fine then I'm scared as there will be something down in the engine waiting to get
sucked up. Could the tensioner have failed? Any other ideas? Right now I'll have to be
tearing into a whole bunch of stuff in the motor to see what caused the timing to get messed
up.
