a full fairing on a klr a possiblity?

Post by Don Ask » Fri Feb 16, 2007 12:45 am

I don't know if this is a just Friday Vendor thing. But it is Friday and nothing is for sale YET. A friend of mine is Craig Vetter, the guy that started all the street fairings. He rides a KLR 650 most of the time. He has been developing a fairing for his personal KLR and been riding the bike to coffee every couple of weeks. I took his KLR for a short ride and I am really am seriously thinking of selling my Voyager and using my KLR for all of my riding. That is once I get one of his fairings on my KLR. I do know that it is just a matter of time before one of his prototypes is on my bike. He keeps tweaking the design and it is getting closer and closer to the almost done version. He was very interested in what He could do to make it better. Asked me what changes I thought it needed. I had to really get picky to make any comment. I set taller than he does, so I could use a taller windshield and if I slid all the way forward on the seat, my knees would touch the edge of the fairing. I have the same problems with my Voyager fairing. He said no problem I will fix those things on the next prototype. The guy is amazing. After we talked I asked him about saying something about it here and he said go ahead. And then said, he would put a fuzzy picture up on his web site. I think he wants fuzzy because the prototype is rough finished and not what he wants to show as a finished product. I think Vetter is about turn loose another classic on the world.

Hello Don, Would you care to share with us what the light(s) configuration on the prototype looks like? Integrated turn signals? revmaaatin. out in my 'other' dual-sporting vehicle tonight, and who beat the next blizzard back to the hanger by a couple of hours.

Sounds neat! Probably the biggest deal would be how easy it would be to switch things back to stock - the only time I'd want a big fairing would be a) winter b) long trip. For my commute and weekend rides I'd probably want to go sans fairing. Please let us know when he has pics up! Jim

That would be very interesting. Last year I committed to ride all year (in Wisconsin). I made a series of wind blockers that were actually pretty effective. I used a large plastic drum and cut pieces from it as needed, a piece of 6 round inch PVC pipe sliced in half and some inner tubes. I blocked the frame behind the fender to keep the wind off my feet and lower legs, half-pipes taped to the tank for the legs and waist area, rubber to block the airflow between the mini-fairing and tank/frame and extended the windshield with plexiglas. It looked like a frankenKLR, something the military was developing. It also drove like a sailboat in a cross wind. The tape I used destroyed my tall windshield too. This year I went to taller boots and a heavier jacket. I use a balaclava under the helmet. It isn't quite as effective but it handles much better. I recently removed the Windjammer (also a Vetter design) from my BMW airhead. I won't be putting it back. Its just too heavy. 30# out in front is just too much for the bike. When you next see Craig please pass on my comments. A lightweight fairing would work. Heck, that Windjammer has 2 built in trunks with lids, turn signals, a mini-dashboard and a headligh. A nice slim, thin shell wind diverter would be great. Thanks for your report. I'll be watching for a follow up.

Thank you for the info on the developing fairing. The KLR is perhaps at the acme of versatility. I would enjoy finding out much more about this modification...a "Farklefairing". Capt. Bob in Durham, CT. USA http://www.essexsteamtrain.com/ 2006 A6F KLR Tires: Dunlop 607's but changing to Mefo Explorers soon Riding: Country roads (20% dirt), dual tracks wherever found and traveling to NY State and upper New England as often as possible.

One thing that would be worth asking for would be a production fairing made of a material that could withstand offroad abuse. Rather than using fiberglass I would like to see polypropylene (the stock fairing material) or even better the cross linked polymer that Pelican uses for their cases. _____ From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Don Ask Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2007 22:03 To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] A full fairing on a KLR a possiblity? Only if it's made out of unbreakable plastic. Maybe he's onto to something if he can provide the style of the 2008 that won't end up in little pieces should the bike fall down and go boom. I think most guys who'd buy it aren't into "fall down and go boom" with their slick road tires, 300 watts of electric farkle, grist wheel-sized rotors and 100 lbs of pointless crap hanging from the bike. Here's an idea... just buy a freakin' Goldwing and get it over with! Mark

Kinda what I was thinking.. Victory Tour might be a better bike for somebody who wants to install a full dresser fairing on a big dirt bike. Now if Kenda made the 270 that would fit on a Victory Tour that would be a nice ride... ;-) Dooden A15 Green Ape
