I'm ordering up a set of K270s for the spring. A fellow I ride with says that a lot of guys on the DR user group love the K270 5.0-17 rear and 3.25-21 front combo. I did a search on here and found a few posts from 2001 saying that the 3.25-21 wasn't very good on the KLR. Is anybody running them now? If so, what has your experience been and on what type of riding? My riding will be about 50% gravel 25% twin track and 25% pavement. Thanks, Al T Calgary, AB, Canada

For what you describe I think the combo is fine. I do pair the K270 rear with an Avon Gripster front. That s because I often go 30+ miles on pavement to get to the off pavement stuff. I find the 270 front to be mildly irritating on smooth pavement and very irritating on rain grooved sections that I often transverse. Bogdan

<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> Al, I run K270s on my bike and have about 16,000 miles experience with them. I like the 3.00x21 front as I think it makes the steering a bit lighter and faster than using a fatter 3.25x21 front. Handling as far as I'm concerned is good and I don't ever worry about the front washing out on a curve. I don't get to do a lot of deep sand but keeping my weight to the rear a bit and the speed up the 3.00 seems to work fine. With full up touring loads I get about 10,000+ smiles from a front and 6,000+ smiles from a rear 5.10x17. I also run tire pressures a bit higher than some at 32psi front and 36psi rear for pavement. In the dirt I'll maybe drop it down to 24/28 or so. I just use the 3.00x21, as that is what the local accessory house keeps in stock. Some guys think the 3.25 has better flotation on sand, which makes sense, but I have so far felt no need for a fatter tire. The skinny one steers sharper on firmer surfaces, although i doubt i could tell without riding them side by side.

I run the K270 front 3.25 with a King KT966 5.10 rear. I'm living in ? Southern Baja this winter and have found the combo to work well for my all around riding. Kurt

I used a Kenda 270 3.25 front on my KLR and now use one on my 640 Adventure. It's amazing how different people feel about the same tire. I live in the sandy deserts of California and love the Kenda in soft sand. I see where another KLRista hated it in the soft sand. Who can say what another rider will like? For me, it also handles pavement just fine and I'd guesstimate I'm around 80th percentile in pavement speed and probably a little better in the dirt. The rear, on the other hand, is marginal on pavement when new and horrible as it wears. For dirt, it's pretty good when new and acceptable as it wears. Jeff Jones

Bogdan, I thinking of going with your combo next. My last couple sets have been a K270 rear and IRC GP-1 front. Works great but I'm thinking I could get a stiffer sidewall with the Gripster which might traslate into more time to get the KLR stopped and/or slowed down without the tire comming off the rim in the event of ... sudden loss of air ; --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, Bogdan Swider wrote: > > For what you describe I think the combo is fine. Group, As I was riding to work the other day on my new Kenda 3.25 front tire I noticed my speedo was now only 2-3 mph fast compared to the unsuspecting Caddy I was pacing. +1 for the 3.25 HA HA HA. Bet ya the odo will be slow now???? Adam 04 KLR650 04 KTM450MXC San Bruno CA

I liked the 3.25 x 21 Kenda I ran. I was playing in lots of sand and loose gravel at that time and found it to get up on plane a bit faster than the 3.00 I had on the day before. But sameo in the corners. typical squirmy feeling with really leaned over and I just never got comfortable with that. Back on Avon Gripsters now but not playing in the sand as much anymore. Just pointing at the obvious.. ;-) Dooden A15 Green Ape
