I don't know if you took off the magneto side. When I replaced the stator, the metal guide that routes the stator cable against the case fatigued and broke. It made a weird whining noise. The part is attached into the side case with a single phillips screw that is impacted in. The metal just broke around the screw and the tab was essentially caught by the magnetic force of the magneto. The noise was made by the rubbing of that part against the rotating magneto. The noise would come and go I suppose depending on how the bit was lodged against the moving parts. I cleaned out the part and have run 10,000 miles without it. I've since purchased a new piece but have never installed it. -svt-

IMHO, the less noise of any kind, on or off road, the better off we all are. Whether or not you're aware of it yourself, the noise raises stress/tension levels of humans and other animals and unnecessarily adversely affects the health and enjoyment of others. And, as mentioned elsewhere, there is realpolitik. If you make too much noise, we will be restricted from trails. Frankly, I don't want to be limited due to another's juvenile, selfish acts, especially something as foolish as an unnecessarily loud muffler. If you want loud noise, record some and wear a headset to pipe it to your ears only. As far as I'm concerned, excess noise is no better than throwing your trash out along the road or trail. It just takes a different form. Steve in Niceville, where we have too much noise and too much roadside trash.

Well said - I totally agree. On a related subject, just yesterday I replaced the copper gasket on my cylinder head/exhaust pipe and my A12 sounds and rides like a totally diffferent ride - no loud popping and fluttering like before. You know the sad part about the KLR is the stock exhaust. I put a race Supertrap on my bike long ago, made a huge difference in the run of the bike. Attention, Ya get lots of that in the middle of nowhere, lol. Running down the highway, ya I might get a little attention from the idiot on their cellphone. Ya you have a point, might be the one that rides next to someone that they find in offensive, but who cares. The bike is made for stress relief and enjoyment. I like being heard on the street and love the performance gain. Its nothing like the two strokes out there in backcountry. I guess it really depends on where you ride. Middle of Nevada, Sierra Mountains, oh ya full of TREE HUGGERS in the sierras. Nice thing is the loud bikes have to have green stickers, and have to stay a certain distance from the houses where people have built next the BLM land and then bitch about the noise. Ride Free buds, If you want to wine, find some other place, Like the Sierra Club.

I get tremendous stress relief and enjoyment when my idiot neighbor rolls-in at 1AM on his unbaffled motard. Remind me to thank him next time I see him. When I go to the HOA board meeting on Feb 6th to defend motorcycles, I'll keep my fingers crossed that none of his neighbors are present.

I know somebody on this list who will give you $50 if you can prove 40hp at the rear wheel. Now's a good time to stand and deliver on those "performance gains". RM

I had a supercrap on my bike for about 1 week. Had a friend take it for a ride and still could hear him 4 blocks away. And not being hard on the gas. I went home and junked it. Back to stock and then a tweety came forth. Bought another pipe on Ebay but it proved to be the competition set up and way too loud. Sold it. Playing with pipes and jetting and intake modes, I found that just drilling 2 1/2" holes in the end of the exhaust gave the same quicker revs and just a touch more nosiy than stock. Heck guess that after over 45 years of riding all kinds of bikes in all kinds of places I just don't feel the need to impress anyone and dang sure don't want to draw attention to myself. Want noise? Go to Iraq and pop off a few thousand rounds and impress those guys. '43 Andy in SWLouisiana '00 KLR 650 '06 DL 1000 '03 Chevy truck

Hey Andrus: Did drilling the holes eliminate tweety? Do you have a picture of the exhaust modification? Did you drill the holes above and below the main exhaust hole or on either side? Would it matter where they are located? Don Andrus Chesley wrote:

You must have a deep psychological need to impress others with your loud exhaust. After all, you are the one who just claimed that noise is noise. I am aghast, I tell you, simply aghast. lol, ed A17
