OK, so I had some problems, Thanks Mike for the call. My intake is
.004 L and .005 R, exaust is .006 L and .008 R. So I am just guessing
I need to swap out some shims. OK I am realy not mechanicaly
inclined and it was a pain in the butt to get this far, So who wants
to come over and help me? Beer? 20 bucks? Whats it gonna take? Ohh
and Sarah your included in this also.
I have a trip to Dumont Dunes planned for easter and would hate to
have to go out there w/out my bike..

Am doing first (my first, not bikes), and having some problems.
Yesterday got things apart and found: ex L .006 270, ex R.004 270,
in L .003 265, in R .006 260. Went to local(Oceanside)Kawi dealer
who only had shims in .005 increments and did some swapping/rearranging
of shims, and this is what I now have: ex. L.006 270, ex. R .005 265,
in. L .005 260, in. R .006 260. Still outta whack, but don't
understand why changes in shim didn't produce much change in clearance.
Anyone have ideas, or can plug my numbers into shim-calc(no Windows
here), and get back to me? Thanks, Porter.

Assuming you're at TDC, and all the other stuff is as it should be, let me
know - to avoid any confusion:
1). what you have for clearances NOW
2). what shims are in there NOW to give you those clearances
3). what clearances you would like to end up with.
I don't trust my math, and since you're not running Windows I'm sure Pat
wouldn't mind if I were to run the numbers in my registered Shimcalc. Let
me know, and I'll do this and return the info with a screen shot of the
ShimCalc display.

EX left: with .006" using a 270, you probably want a 260 to get you up
near .010"
EX right: with .004" using a 270, you probably want a 255 to get you up
near .010"
IN left: with .003" using a 265, you probably want a 255 to get you up
near .007"
IN right: with .006" using a 260, you probably want a 255 to get you up
near .008"
Don't sweat it if you're off by .001". It's just not that critical. One
shim size is not exactly .002", but it's pretty close.

Been two years since the last valve check/adjustment I had done by a
shop mechanic I trust that does side biz at home.
Well he , the mech, moved , changed jobs.. so I decided to get off me
lazt duff and do it at home.
I was surprised at how complex the klx's upper cast one piece cam
journals are, yikes 16 bolts v/s 8 on the klr which uses std ole four
piece caps.
Had all for of the klr's on the tight side.... it had only been done
oncet at 500 mile service and now has 16k mi.. I said i was lazy,
procrastinator too.
Only one of the klx's were on the low side of the tolerance.
Now waiting for the 1/4" drive torque wrench to get here on mail
order. I don't see any other way to torque some of the cap bolts with
the little height there is. The 3/8 is way too tall ...
Cam lobes all look purty.
Getting ready for the next ride!

Along with the current discussion on valve adjustments - I had two
dealers tell me that a check was not needed at the 500 mile service.
Still I worry.
O.K. I will explose that I am not a gearhead ( as much as I would
like to be ) so humor me by answering a dumb question. Why does the
KLR call for a valve adjustment every 6,000 miles and a Honda scooter
with the shim under bucket call for an adjustment every 16,000
miles? I am sure there must be a reason, but it beats the heck out
of me.
Thanks for humoring an old guy

I don't know why either. I set my valves to the widest clearance at 750mi. I
checked them at 10,000mi and none needed adjustment. They had all closed up
by .001 or .002" but were still within spec. At the rate they were closing,
they will need adjustment by 16,000mi or so.
Maybe Kawasaki says "500mi" because they count on lazy round-eyes to wait
until 3000 mi, and 6000 as intervals because it needs to be done every
12,000.

Hello,
I have started my valve adjustment today on 770 milies. I found that
left inlet has 0.0015" ( 0.03mm) clearance. This is a real out of the
specification and have to be changed. I don't know is it a common
situation for KLR engine or not but I think you have to check your
valves. I found that thisi is real easy and I did it at 30 minutes
without any manuals.

At 700 miles I had two valves out-of-spec. Having one or more valves
out-of-spec at the time of the first valve check seems to be the most
common scenario.
I
do
not
like
dealers.
OK. I feel better. Good luck. Take a clue-by-four to whack 'em over the
head with...

Lots of valve talk recently, so I wanted to ask:
What are the ramifications of NOT doing your valve adjustments?
