thinking about selling my klr

Hi Group, went thru the post for comments on extra lighting, no luck. I would like to add extra driving lights for the night time desert/forest ridng here in the Reno, NV area. I have the Happy Trails Radiator/Engine guard and would there be a way to mount to it or any other acceptable place the wouldn't meet the demise of bouncing off the ground? Not to mention the switch and wiring of it for the KLR. Your help/comments would be appreciated. Thxs. LT

One simple way to increase lighting is to go with a PIAA Quartz Halogen Headlight 55/60W Bulb. It puts out the 110w of light on high beam and supposedly only draws 60w. I think this makes a very noticeable difference over stock. Fred had them in stock when I got mine. They may seem spendy at $45 but it's a simple improvement that doesn't require more switches and/or lights to be mounted somewhere. Steve

There are any number of lights you can use but be mindful of the KLR's limited capacity for powering them, HID is expensive but will give you great output for less consumption. I'm thinking of swapping out the standard H4 in the headlight for an HID Low Beam only unit and using the spare watts to power up a couple of Aux. HID Lights for main beam duties, maybe the Phillips HID's or the Hella Micro DE's but they are around $700 a pair! In terms of mounting, well most KLR owners are pretty creative so I'm sure there are a lot of home made versions out there but if you want an after market solution you can check BLM's brackets, not cheap but his stuff is excellent quality. He does have a day job so drop him an email if you are interested. Northern tool & equipment sells a 3 1/2" halogen driving spotlight pair for $9.99 +s/h. It is item # 18814-2701. northerntool.com. 55 watts each so be careful about use during idle rpm. Not the best for serious off roading but perfect for "light"duty/fire road type stuff (excuse the pun). For the price you can't beat it.Inexpensive to replace if you wreck. Another thing you might consider is fog lights from a junk yard. Lots of vehicles came equipped with them, they are pretty low on their power usage, you can get them for next to nothing, and you can mount them wherever you want. They won't be so bright they'll be blinding, but should provide enough lighting to do the job. Mount them near the turn signals and point them outwards, maybe 15-30 deg to get an arc of light.
