I'm considering getting one of these for my KLR 650:
www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores/ser ... reId=10101
Anybody who has one want to tell me why I should or shouldn't get it, or
why I should spend the extra bucks for a Givi topcase?
Thanks for any info.

Get it, great price, durable as heck, holds almost anything you
could need, and looks pretty decent too. I have one and use it
every time I ride. I have mounted it in two places, first was right
on top of the rear rack with the tool box blocked, then later I
moved it back to be able to use the toolbox. I like it further back
because it gives me more room for my sleeping bag and tent, and I
can also access my tools. I haven't noticed any negative handling
but I don't really put anything really heavy in it either. Best of
luck,
Scotty

Don't leave home without it. Here's how I mount mine:

Frank, it's a fantastic value, and works / holds up exceptionally well. Good
enough, in fact, that I gave it a webpage, and not just "honorable mention"
or something in the Miscellaneous section:
http://klr6500.tripod.com/jcwtrunk.htm
I've had one of those trunks on my bike since about 1 month after I bought
my KLR, a little over 2 years. It remains 100% waterproof, is off or on the
mount literally in seconds, which gives you very convenient luggage. Also,
the locking latch continues to work without a single problem. (I mention
this last part because I've seen Givi trunks (not) in action.)
Go for it! You'll love it, and you can use the money that you saved to buy
more KLR stuff from Arrowhead Motorsports! (Fred, make sure to get that
check in the mail soon, OK? (Laughing))

Does anyone have some input on the best way to attach the mounting
plate for the trunk.
Thanks!

I went to a hardware store and bought some stainless flathead screws,
nuts, and lockwashers. I threw out the hardware that came with the box.
Remove the stock toolkit and box, put the box on the plate, and position
it on the rack so the box makes a comfortable backrest for your usual
passenger. Mark the position.
Make sure the mounting holes you use are over the thick parts of the
rear rack. Don't go hog wild tightening the bolts or you'll crack the
mounting plate. Use a bit of loctite on the nuts and you won't have to
worry about them shaking out. Lockwashers + loctite = belt + suspenders.
Some people have mounted it far back enough to retain use of the stock
toolbox. I didn't think this was safe. I am looking into making a
mounting plate of strong enough metal that I can cut out the middle and
use the toolbox. This way the topbox is still in the good "backrest"
position.

Here's how I did mine:
http://www.xlproject.com/images/trunk_mount.jpg
I used the fasteners that came with the trunk. The front 2 holes line up
perfectly and screw right in where the stock screws were. I drilled 2 new
holes in the mounting plate for the rear. The 2 middle stock screws stayed
in place. Cut the toolkit hole later with my dremel tool, but looks like I
may not have been entirely sober at the time. Oh well, here's a side view:
http://www.xlproject.com/images/trunk.jpg
It's a little crowded with a passenger, but not too bad.

Is this the best trunk for the money on the market? How does it do
keeping gear dry in the rain? I plan to mount the trunk like Mark has
shown on his website, any negatives with that? Thanks for the help.

Jim, I got one, and I like it. Price is right, does well in the rain, and
looks good on the A19.
Enjoy!
