99 klr oil screen

Did an oil screen check and clean on my brother-in-laws KLR. Pictures
are posted. Look under 99 KLR oil screen. The oil screen was very
bad, but what concerned me the most was the loose band spring from the
shift shaft assembly. It was laying behind the shaft assembly and
wrapped around the tension spring. I do not know how he was able to
shift like this. Has anyone else ever find this on theirs. If this
band had floated who knows what damage it could have done. This bike
has 20,000 miles and seems to be just fine and we are both thankful
that we did the oil screen on his bike before the Arkansas trip at the
end of the month.
