ok this may be old hat but

The original "FB" battery in my A14 died the other day. I pulled the same specification (YB14L-A2) Wal-Mart battery out of another bike but found it was too tall to slide the battery cover over. That battery is 166mm tall, 2mm more than the original. I looked up Yuasa specs on the Web and found that the YB14L-A2 is 166mm tall. I measured a Champion version at the store and it too measured 166mm. Has anyone experienced this? Why is my battery compartment short? Clint

Hello Clint, Yep, 2mm to tall. Just slide the OEM top-cap over the top of the battery, yes, outside of the little slots made for it, and use the battery. Works just fine. Annoying, but works just fine. revmaaatin.

Hello Anthony, I have been collecting battery info for almost 3 years, and this is the first time (that I remember) that this battery has come up. Any idea how long it is expected to last? Just as a note, I got over 4 years (doing careful battery maintenance, =every 1500 miles) out of my OEM which is longer than most indicate on this list. I replaced it with a Wal-Mart Yusa battery, which is less than a perfect fit, although, it has not required any maintenance in 2K miles, and Jeff Saline mentioned yesterday, his has gone 5K miles, without being serviced. Amazing the difference in one wet-cell battery to the next. Thanks for this tip. It looks like it could be my next battery. Infomation like this is why I read the-LIST. Where else could you find out where to export ex-wives, use bacon for a chain lube and find a perfect, no-mod battery in the same week. And in KLRista fashion, it is all free. revmaaatin.

I have a Westco sealed that's about four years old. It's a metric c*nthair too tall for the lid to slide back on. I ended up wedging a piece of urethane material in next to the battery to wedge it into place and stop it from bouncing around. BTW, I highly recommend this battery. I do NOT treat mine well (KLR sits for weeks with no trickle charger) and it's still going strong after four years. RM

revmaaatin, I really have no idea how long it will last. AGM batteries are supposed to hold up to vibration much better than wet cells. That, and the fact that it requires no maintenance is the reason I went with it. Plus, I'm a cheep skate, the price was right. I don't ride the KLR or RS as much as I'd like, so they stay hooked to a battery tender 24/7. The original battery in the KLR was a little more than 6 years old, with about 5500 miles when I replaced it. Keep in mind that this KLR is the 250, no electric start and no accessories, with a very primitive charging system. If I get 5 years out of this one, I'll be happy. Anthony, I fear you have taken us down a rabbit trail... Since this was a thread-question about the battery compartment for an A14 (KLR650) you have introduced a red herring! I now see that your signature is D16, and, it is not a typo. Do you suppose the Battery compartment for a KLR250 is identical to the KLR650, and, if the battery info, dimensions, etc, offered is still logical/relevant? I know, it is the details... It would seem (logical) to me the KLR250 would use a smaller battery, then again, logic suggests that items like the...doohickey...lower first gear...6 gears...WD-40...synthetic oil...would all be addressed in upgrades Looks like a nice battery website though. revmaaatin.

Anthony, not to worry. It was a small rabbit. Speaking of rabbits, I hit a jackrabbit Wednesday night and I was glad I was in the wife's car and not on the KLR. Hit the sucker with the front tire and it jerked the steering wheel out of my hands. That rabbit seemed like it was the size of a coyote. revmaaatin.
