rear brakes...

This is a horse that has probably been beaten beyond death. But in
trying to swim through the archives, I have found nothing. Thus i am
asking here:
1)Why am I going through rear brakes? I just replaced them in March
and put 7000 - 8000 miles on (as well as 3 rear tires)
2)Why is the inboard pad wearing faster? That is why I am replacing
them this time and why I replaced them before... I clean (with emry
cloth) and lube the rods that the brake rides on... I make sure it is
moving smoothly too. What gives?

PS I have been searching for a better carb for the KLR and when I find
it I will let you know. I think Holly will be my best bet...

I should add that I use the front brake quite a bit more than the
rear because, for a while, I had no rear brake and got use to it.

Try reducing the amount of times you use the brakes. Use engine compression and down shifting to assist in braking. Also, as I explained to my wife, when approaching traffic lights, you will without fail, absolutely every time, have a red light after the yellow light. Once she recognized and understood that infallible sequence, she started slowing down when she saw the yellow. Her brake replacements went from once a year to every five years.

Andy,
I haven't had to mess with my brakes as I only have a bit over 19,000
smiles and the pads are still quite thick. But I'm guessing the caliper
is hanging up on the mount. Might also be worth spinning the rear wheel
with an indicator of some sort on it to see if the rotor is warped. I
don't know off hand what the run out limit is on the KLR rotor but it's
probably 0.004" or less.
Best,

I did the same thing. I routed it down with all the other lines through the
little hoop things (look where the drain from the airbox goes).
