Hi Everyone,
My progressive springs just arrived here a work and I wanted to pick
up some fork oil on the way home. Does anybody know how much fork oil
I will need? (I didn't expect them to arrive until next week so I
didn't RTFM in advance)
On a side note, I am leaning toward 15wt as I am about 185lbs w/o
gear. I have heard that the compression dampening gets harsher with
the heavier weight oil but I haven't heard anyone complain that it's
excessive. Am I wrong?
Also, the new progressive springs come with metal spacers so I was
planning on running them as is and not going with any custom lengths
unless someone convinces me otherwise. (i.e. using PVC spacers)
In addition to springs, I am also going to be putting in new headset
bearings; if I pop the races in the freezer before hand can I tap
them in (carefully and squarely) with a brass punch?
One more thing, since I am doing the headset and will have the forks
off the bike (as an assembly) should I turn them upside down to drain
and/or try to flush them? I have heard people say that you can use
transmission fluid as a cheap flushing agent but that makes me a
little nervous. Yea/Nay???
This is all something I wanted to re-read on the list but since I am
forced to put the oil quantity question out there now I thought I
would add the other questions as well.
Thanks in advance

nklr help with selecting tent & related gear thanks
nklr help with selecting tent & related gear thanks
Thank you to all who gave me great advice on tents and
camping in general both on the list and off list.
I'm exploring all the good information and experience
generously shared. I am looking forward to gathering
the basics along with a few luxuries for camping on my
KLR.
Thank you for all the help!
-Mike

how much fork oil?
Ok, I now have enough fork oil (bought both 10wt and 15wt) to run a
small country and I picked up a couple quarts of ATF also so I now have
everything for my Sunday fork/headset rebuild.
Here is the plan so far:
Install headset races from freezer with brass punch, I have no idea
what the press fit is like so I hope this works ok.
I plan to use Bell Ray waterproof grease for the bearings unless I have
the time to install a zerk (sp) fitting in which case I will be somewhat
limited to what I can find locally for the grease gun.
For the forks, the more I think about it the more I like the idea of
flushing the forks with the ATF, my initial reservation was with cross
contamination of the oils but I figure they probably have pretty similar
properties (i.e. both hydrolic etc) and besides, I figure better to have
a little cross contamination of oil than simply adding fresh oil on top
of the residual worn metal goo that I assume will be left in there after
draining.
I am going to start with the 15wt (again, unless people chime in)
knowing that draining and adding the 10wt at a later date is a simple
process. In a moment of weakness I purchased the Motion Pro fork oil
measuring tool even though my original intent was to spend an hour at
the hardware store and create one for significantly less. Oh well, it
will give me an excuse to change my fork oil more often as I try to
justify the cost of the tool.
So that's the plan, if anyone would like to add anything please feel
free, I won't be working on this until Sunday so there is still time.
Thanks in advance,

how much fork oil?
Forks off the bike, springs out, inner tube bottomed out should
measure 190mm from the top of the inner tube. Drained completely I
think 420 ml is the number, manual in garage so I cannot confirm atm.
I used a plastic ruler, held my thumb at the 190 mark to check,
after adding oil, also not sure but I cycled the tube up and down a
few times to ensure no air was trapped.
Used 10wt with stock springs and seems fine to me, thinking 15wt
would have been harsh, bout 190 lbs no gear for me.
Yet to do any heavy off road riding, but seems fine to me.
I had recently changed fork oil, (10wt) so flushing was basically
done then using the fresh oil, then popped a seal Grrrrrrrrrrr....
however it was possible I added too much oil, or forgot to bleed off
excessive air pressure in tube before hammering them then.
On the blown seal fork, either I used too much air pressure to pop
the seal or the top bushing came out on its own, reseated using the
wrong tools, but was very carful doing so, using a non-sparking
screwdriver (bronze?) to tap the bushing into place.
No idea on the head bearings, but the freezer method seems to be the
best in other applications to me. (rear wheel when I did it)
Good Luck
