This is normal wear for a knobby used on the street. When you hit the front brake, the knobs roll a bit and the knobs wear at a funny angle. The rear doesn't usually do this. The Kenda K270 everyone uses are a complete rip-off of the IRC GP-1. I've used a K270 front, it's squirrely. The knobs roll around easily, even though the tire grips well it feels a little funny. If you're used to street tires it's disturbing, but you get used to it. The IRC GP1 has been my tire of choice for the last seven years. For myself, I find the GP1 to be stable enough to corner hard enough to scuff the tires to the outer most edge of the outer most row of knobs. My own preference is to run 21/22 up front and 23 in the rear for solo riding. I get between 4000-5000 out of the rear and go through two rears for each front and I flip the front around with the second rear tire. With that much road vs dirt, you might want to look at the IRC GP110s instead of the GP1s. I'm about through my first GP110 rear, and have been happy with it.
