The only place you can get Shell Rotella around here is at Wall Mart. Wall Mart smells Chinese like. In fact sometimes it gets so bad that 1/2 hour after you leave you want to go shopping again. George Escondido, CA Ronald Criswell wrote:

IMO 15W40 is too heavy a base weight for the KLR engine. With lots of choices in the 5W40 and 10W40 there seems to be no good reason to select such a high base number oil. It mystifies me as to why so many people believe that they should run heavier weight oils...... Do that with many of the newer cage engines and they will not survive. For a revolutionary solution one could always try following the manufacturer's recommendations for the KLR oil viscosity. Just my $0.02 Norm [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

KTM recommends 10W-50(and uses synthetic from the factory). Best for KLR? None at WalMart though. Fred

I don't have my owners manual in front of me, but I think I get 20/50 as the recommendation for my climate. Am I mistaken? -- Doug Herr doug@...

I don't think thats true Norm. 15W40 won't hurt a thing except maybe the fuel mileage. I'm told that the big move to 5wt and even "0" wt is for the tiny mileage gain one experiences. This is also the main impact of putting V rated premium tires on many new cars. The have less rolling resistance due to the stiffer sidewalls. Back to the oil though. Its been proven out by many (millions?) of miles on the KLR engine with no negative effect. The only real problem I've read about is harder starting in the cold. The KLR engine is relatively understressed and there are no indications that heavier oil has a harmful effect. The clearances, tolerances, material strengths and such are all capable of handling the heavier weight. The only real internal flaw seems to be the doohickey and we are all scratching our heads trying to figure that one out. I like the insurance that I'll have a higher viscosity when the oil is getting thinned and hot. Regarding newer cage engines; I'm running 10-40 in my Honda Civic which originally recommended 5-W20. Its got 290,000 miles on it, starts well, runs great, has full power and doesn't burn any oil. They only reason I don't run 15-40 Rotella is the possible damage to cat convertors from the additives, and I even question that. From all reports, the 15-40 diesel rated oil seems to do a great job in the KLR engine. I will add one thing. As long as I've been on this forum I've not heard a single person report an engine failure due to oil, only lack of oil. With reasonable change intervals any motor oil works just fine. So why would I switch to Royal Purple, Amzoil or Redline? I guess just because I want to. Have fun, ride often, ride safe.

I just checked the book on my A15. It recommends 10-40, 10-50, 24-40 or 20-50. No word on synthetics.
