canyonlands motor classic (cmc) - reports & pics?????

I missed the event this year and have been out of town all week. But when I cranked up my digit-machine I saw no stories. Did I miss the write-ups? Pat M

canyonlands motor classic (cmc) - reports & pics?????

Post by John Biccum » Sun Jun 11, 2006 2:35 pm

In a word: hot. Near record breaking temperatures when we were there. I drank almost eight liters of water on the White Rim Trail and was still a little dehydrated. I even drank two liters of 120 degree water proffered by the Park Ranger. Sucking down water the temperature of bath water took some real hydration discipline. I'm not sure if I am finally learning to ride in sand or if my new Dunlop Rally Raid front tire is just a great sand tire. But either way I motored thru some sandy areas that would have terrified me on earlier trips. Too bad Dunlop does not make it to fit a 17 inche rear. Other highlights: changing a tire on a horse trailer while sitting on an anthill in 110 degree temperatures. Thankfully Aerostitch Darien pants proved to be antproof. We also made it over to Canyon de Chelly and had a chance to see some of the back country in the Navajo Nation compliments of a fatal motor vehicle accident cum crime scene closure of US 191. Photos here: http://johnbiccum.smugmug.com/gallery/1540470/6 PS: I refuse to comment of the alegations that I was in the lead when we ended up in an impassible sand wash while attempting find a way around the closure of US 191. _____ From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Pat Sent: Sunday, June 11, 2006 12:16 AM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Canyonlands Motor Classic (CMC) - reports & pics????? Viewed your pics - great! Always love Moab, Canyonlands, etc. I'm curious about the black scoop system on the KLR tank, such as where did you get it and do you think it was worth it? Thakx, Steve --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "John Biccum" wrote:

The only "black scoop system" on my KLR is molded into the IMS tank: http://www.angelfire.com/ut/moab/images/imstank.jpg Fred at Arrowhead Motorsports has them. I think the larger tank is worth it just to get rid of the hassle of dealing with the seperate shrounds. The extra gas capacity is nice too but the extra heft when the tank is full is not too much fun offroad. _____ From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Kimosabe Sent: Sunday, June 11, 2006 1:27 PM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: Canyonlands Motor Classic (CMC) - reports & pics????? Thanks John! The pics are great, wish I could-a joined you guys ('cept for the heat}. Looks like a fair representation of KLR-12-step-program members at Fred's place too. Always nice to meet others with the same addiction, eh? Pat M

I you decide to do the Dempster Highway from just South of Dawson City, Yukon to Inuvik, NWT be advised that there is 100 miles plus of sharp shale on the Yukon side which cuts sht sh*t out of tires, especially if it is wet. Once you hit the NWT side the road is clay for 100's of miles which is slicker than sn*t. Have loads of fun! Lived in Yukon for 11 years, Norm [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
