a week or so ago i put out a request on this list for information
reguarding my IDS2 --KN--stage 2 set up on the KLR , from people who
might have similar set ups. apparently noone is running this set up as
i hae had no response. I will approach this a different way.
hopefully this list has several top flite mechanically inclined people
and/or true blue mechanics that could answer my questions. I have
installed a supertrapp IDS2 quiet exhaust on my A7. a running all 12
discs and spark arrestor. i got a KN power kit that includes filter and
appropriate dynojet kit. it has precise instuctions for a stage 1 or 2
set up------i have used a stage 2 set up. open airbox--150 main--pilot
out 3&1/2 etc. here is what happens: starts instantly and is instantly
ready to run full out----without any choke. no
hesitation, stumbling, surging etc. bike has tremendous power and will
redline easily in 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th(comes out of 4th at redline and
90mph. when it hits 5th-----------nothing! it is done at 90 mph ( the
tack in 5th at 90mph reads 6000.) questions: is the engine done?? is
there something not allowing the engineto reach redline??? my mileage
wentfrom 65 down to 50 but that is fine. do i have a problem or not???
thanks in advance for your kind help kingfish

I have the same Super Trapp and Dynojet carb kit. I originally put in
8 discs and the middle size jet. Also I cut some big holes in the top
of the air box and installed a KN filter. I had the same simptoms as
you describe. My bike pulled great up to about 87mph and just
stopped. Also it didn't need the choke to start and the milage went
down about 15%. I left it that way until it was time for an engine
service. During that time the exhaust showed it was running way to
rich. I put smallest jet in the kit in the carb and added 2 more
discs (total 10) the the exhaust. It still runs fine but now I have
to use the choke again and the milage is back up to about 50mpg now.
The best mileage I ever got was about 55mph. It goes about 95mph
now. I've been riding my bike for about 1000mi since I made these
changes and it seems to be running fine. Hope this is of some help.

The KLR is as aerodynamic as a barn, which suits it's intended mission as a
dual sport. The motor can't produce enuf power to overcome the huge air
resistance of 90+ mph riding. I've had my KLR to 100 exactly once just to
see if it would do it, not because it was necessary OR fun (it was neither).
If you need 90+ routinely, might I suggest a different/more suitable/safer
bike for this task. I've seen people on here try to make the KLR a KX, a
Gold Wing, but never a Ninja.

That's what the Tengai is for.

I run 100 and 110 , Coming and going to Big
Bend its WFO for 300 miles, Then ride around a couple of 250 mile days and
then again its WFO back to Odessa, Now me a another KLR are loaded, Kitchen
sink and all, Sometimes she will run 90 and other times 100 fully loaded....
But i run the 16 T sprocket coustom pipe and jet kit with a K&N, And screen
out of air box.
Last year i ran my KLR WFO for 16 hours comming back from copper cayon,
Stoped for gas, when needed, and ate once Other than that it was WFO the
whole
time. Now since i am a sport bike rider. I ride laying down, I place my feet
on the back pegs fold my arm on the gas tank right on the gas cap , and then
place my head on my arm, Of course i dont ride in the dirt like this.LOL.
Hell fire the KLR does not make enough power to hurt itself, It will run
forever with a little TLC.......

I'd also like to hear any thoughts on muffler options. My used '99
came with a Super Trapp. I played with the baffles to try to bring
the decibel level down a bit but it feels like I'm compromising power
and efficiency when I remove too many baffles. I have reverted to
leaving it almost fully open. The only problem is that I'm sounding a
bit like the Straight Pipe Harley People I have always complained
about when I have a migraine.
While it's not fun watching people and animals cringe when I drive by,
there is definitely a plus when I'm passing cars. There's no doubt I
get their attention when I come up along side them and I appreciate
the safety factor I get out of that.
But to my mind I think it would be nice to keep the volume level
down. There's enough noise pollution in the world already, and in the
woods, too, I'd like to respect to the hikers and people there to get
away from noise.
Is the "Quiet Series" a lot quieter? My fantasy would be a super
quiet muffler that somehow managed to deliver the same extra horse
power. A Stealth KLR ....
Thanks for any thoughts. This is an awesome forum.

Subject: Quieting a SuperTrapp IDS2 muffler.
The previous owner of my '01 added a Super Trapp muffler. While I
appreciate the slight boost in HP, it's a bit on the loud side for my
taste. I know very little about exhaust -- is there anyway to quiet
it
down a bit, even if it means loosing a little power? I love early
morning rides, but don't want to tick off the neighbors.

You are fooling yourself. There is no safety factor, and in a modern well-sealed car with the radio on a reasonable volume,
nobody hears you until you're too close for it to matter.
The Harley folks you complain about are doubly stupid since the straight pipes mostly produce good power at an RPM they rarely
use on the street. The stock KLR exhaust also gives a better spread of power than the supertrapp, though a bit less peak power.
If it's going to be loud, it had better be fast. And the KLR will never be fast, so stop now. The same people who are cringing
now will be voting for land closures later, so you're screwing all of us not just yourself.
The quiet core would likely be less noisy, but I have an ISD2 pipe sitting on a shelf because it's too noisy if you set it open
enough for good power. I am thinking of rigging a secondary set of 4" discs instead of the end cap for further noise reduction.

My used '99 came with Supertrap as well, fell apart in 10,000 miles.
broken welds, fell off, a big pain. The aluminium construction isn't
compatible with the power pulses of the big single, and it is doomed
to failure...

I bought a '97 with a Super Trapp can. It's to loud. I understand they
are supposed to be adjustable with disks. Does anyone know this is
done? Thanks.
