I thought that was considered a bad idea for a bike that sees mud, sand, etc. The grit attacks the belt. Not that I have a clue about this, but that was the sort of stuff said about the BMW(?) dualsport with a belt. -- Doug Herr doug@...

That's a silly suggestion, Fred! A KLR needs to be able to lift the front wheel on trails and belt drives can't wheelie. Norm

(snifff.... Ahh... the sweet smell of bait. The list traffic is slow so I'll bite....) Wish all motorcycles would go to belts. Love the one on my Harley. No lube required, (and no lube mess), no stretch, no adjustments needed (at 20K miles so far), no sprocket wear, no need to clean religiously, no annoyances at all. It just goes round and round and round forever - silently, effectively and with near zero maintenance and wear. It would be nice if these belts could be made thinner for applications on a wider range of bikes. Flame away. Unless you're too busy cleaning, adjusting or lubricating your chain, or ordering a new one, or looking for your missing master link, or shopping online for chain breaker or pin peening tool, etc. I'll wait for you.

Why would you want to? Had dinner last night with a friend who had just picked up his E-glide from having a new belt installed. The bill was over $500, less than half for the belt, the rest labor since you can't break and rivet a belt to replace it. He picked up a small stone that got between the belt and pulley, if you can avoid that a belt can last 100,000 miles, I wouldn't gamble on it on a bike that might see much of any unpaved road. JMHO. Belts are certainly the best choice for riding environments that do not pose serious traction challenges. It would be interesting to see how a belt would perform in gumbo clay half way up the wheel pulley. Take your FXLR out to a mud hole somewhere and give it a shot. Let us know how you make out. Nothin wrong with belts IMO, it's the cogged sprockets that go with them . They can get get little rocks jammed into them that can damage the belt if not caught and pryed out. My bud had it happen to his brigg n davidson on a trip we were on. $500 bucks installed-ouch!

I've never done it.Though, I did think about a belt drive when i first bought my 2002.Probably every KLR owner that has ever done anything to the chain has thought about a belt drive systme for the KLR.The way it was explained to me....The dirt bike like clearance and travel of the Uni-Trak suspension is the problem.You would need some sort of spring loaded device to apply tention to the slack belt.I still think it is totally doable... It is just that no one smart enough has applied themselves to a KLR drive belt conversion.If a mechanic/mechanist could figure out a do it yourself kit,I bet they could sell a LOT of them.
