Hi all,
I believe this is my first post here.
I met Martin last fall at my local dealership. We talked for a while,
about riding together, but he had to get going to work and I was
nursing a broken clavicle (I really dislike deer now (but the klr
survived)) so nothing ever came of it.
I've been waiting on parts and just couldn't take it anymore so I
decided to put the bike back to stock (well sort of)so I could ride.
After a few small problems I got her going and made a trip to work and
back. I figured all was well so I was planning on giving Martin a
call on 05-20-06 and see if he would be interested in riding next
weekend or something. Wouldn't you know it, he called on the 19th to
see if I was intersted in riding the following morning. Hell yeah I was!!
So we made plans to meet in town at 08:00. Of course I was a little
late, no biggie. We ate some breakfast and off we went.
The plan was to be a 50ish mile ride south east to a pasture for some
single track. We took mostly hiway, but only because the gravel we
tried was to dusty with absolutly no crosswind. One of the hiways was
like a bronc ride (well maybe not but close). It was quite fun at
speed. Soon enough we were in the town of Conde, just east was our
destination. You could see the dark hills in the hazy mid morning
light.
Out of Conde we headed and onto the gravel. After 2 miles we were at
an intersection with the road ahead of us turning into a section line.
Two tracks and alot of grass. Martin was leading in the left track
and I was following in the right. All was good, our first semi
off-road part of the trip. Marting was admittedly going slower than
normal since I was with, wich didn't bother me since I hadn't been
here before. I was in my own little world watching my line ahead,
when out of nowhere Martin was flining side to side and then off his
bike and on the ground. It all seemed to be in slow motion to me and
it just wasn't making sense in my head... so much so I almost fogot to
stop!
I pulled up and ripped my helmet off and could hear Martin groaning a
bit but he was getting up on his own. I thought at the worst he got
the wind knocked out of him. We were traveling at most 15mph. He
asked me to pick his bike up so I did. I asked him if he broke
anything, He said "I don't know", not a good start. I told him not to
be in a hurry and that we could stand here all day if he wanted to.
So he took his jacket and vest off and examined himself. He had a big
knot on his shoulder joint (and one under his arm he didn't tell me
about...) So now I thought at worst a broken clavicle.
While Marting was resting I went back to examine the scene of the
crime. It was a dried up rut that started out 13-15" deep. Martins
left foot peg contacted the wall of the rut and pulled his front tire
into the wall, he reacted and then hit the right side. Then he went
back to the left, but at this point the rut was only 3-4" deep and his
front wheel went over the edge, lost traction and out from under him.
He hit the ground with his shoulders perpendicular to the ground and
his body parallel, just about the worst angle to hit... well head
first is probably not good either. After he hit he rolled once.
Neither he nor his bike traveled more than 4' after they impacted the
ground.
Now time had passed and Martin was ready to get out of here. He saw a
stop sign ahead and had me ride up to see if there was a gravel road.
There was! So we slowly made our way to the road and then south to
the hiway. We road past Conde and the next town, then turned north.
Martin was doing good riding straight and didn't apear to be having to
any problems. A few miles later it was time to stop for a break and a
call to work to tell them he wouldn't make it tonight. On the very
road Martin pulled over on a yong man he knew came pulling up. His
house was 1 mile away and he offered Martin a ride. Thank goodness.
So we went to his house and at that point getting off the KLR was a
problem. Marting was getting stiff. I sure was glad he didn't have
to ride the rest of the way.
So to the emergency room they went, with me in hot pursuit.
When I arrived at the hospital I could hear how much pain Martin was
in, clearly I had underestemated the severity of his injuries. They
had him on pain meds but they just weren't doing the trick. I finally
got to see him for a bit and he was in good spirits at least when he
wasn't in the pain redline.
It turns out he had broken or cracked 5 or 6 ribs (the jury is still
out on this one) and possibly his clavicle?
I visited Martin today (two days later) and he still wasn't sure of
the extent of his injuries. He certainly was doing much better and
was able to move and even sit up. We joked around and laughed (one
thing I couldn't do when I hurt my ribs... must be some good drugs
lol) and talked about the klr. He requested that I post here and let
you guys know he would be out for a while. Hopefully my post
wasn't to much.
Martin is a very good guy and I'm glad that I met him, it just sucks
that our first ride together ended this way. It was a blast up until
that point, but there will be more adventures to come!

Please extend my sincerest regards to Revmaaatin. Hopefully, he is
recovering comfortably and will be back in the saddle soon.
Sincerely,
Brian
PS - On a safety note to riders, I recommend riding with full upper
body armor (I wear O'Neil Azonic Z-6). Furthermore, in accidents
like this, always be concerned with internal injury (rapid
deceleration of internal organs). I know of one story where someone
took a fairly hard fall but got up explaining he was alright.
Within an hour he collapsed and died because of internal bleeding
from a torn aorta.

TOP POSTED for well wishes - - -
Welcome to the group A.J. - thanks for passing the news along about
'The Rev.' Wish it were better, glad it isn't worse. I'm sure the
regular posters and semi-lurkers like me join in sending heal-quick
prayers & best wishes to your ride partner Martin. He's a true asset
to this group with great insight & sense of humor.
Hey Martin - always knew you rotary wing guys have too many moving
parts - we fixed wing types only break one rib when we biff. Heal
quick & believe the quacks when they tell you to "stay ahead of the
pain." - GO NAVAIR!

Welcome A.J. and thanks for the update. The rev is a valued lister
here and unofficial group chaplin. Sorry to hear Martin is banged up
and he'll be in my prayers for a speedy recovery. Sounds like he
must be a tough old helo jockey.
If there's a plus side to this, like many regular listers here, when
the weather becomes more suitable for riding, the posts slow down.
Martin's wit was already being missed. I suppose his posting season
will be extended a little this year while he recovers.
Martin, heal well my friend, let your fingers do the riding for
awhile. And maybe now I might catch you at home when I pass through.

A.J.,
Thanks for letting us know what happened. Man that was a bad way to
start the day a bit before 6am. First post I read this morning. It read
like a horror story. I knew something bad was going to happen but had to
read most of the post to find out what really happened.
I had been wondering what Martin was up to as we hadn't talked in about a
week as I've been traveling. I suppose this means he won't be coming out
to the Airhead Tech Day this weekend. I'll get a card this morning and
drop it in the mail to him.
Thanks again for letting us know what happened and for taking care of him
after he quit riding. : )

Geesh, thats a rough way to start the riding season. Shows a lot of
sand that the Rev managed to ride out as far as he did. Figures he'd
be in good spirits after a few nights rest. Well, at least he should
be able to plan for a 4th of July ride. Tell the Rev that is mishap
has convinced me to add another article of ATGATT (all the gear, all
the time). Last summer I came up short caving in a few ribs 20 miles
from nowhere. I've always been worried about the lack of chest armour
with a riding jacket so I've been looking at those under the jersey
systems for my 50/50 riding. Think I take the opportunity to combine
the Rev's lesson with mine and get one.

Yep, that is the style I'm looking for. Fox, Alpinestar and Sixsixone have
similar units. For something like this I'm a size Medium/Large: a medium
jacket with long sleeves. I want to do some trying on to make sure it fits my
build.
Be assured the rev is pain free. Type of pain killers they give you for
this, usually morphine, you could pour a glass of ice water in his lap and he
wouldn't feel it but for the wet. The fun comes in two days when he has to be
off the heavy stuff. Until it has cleared his system they wont release him but
there is still going to be major pain. Hope he has a good barca lounger to
sleep in. With busted ribs its the only way to get from stretched out to
sitting.
