Met a guy yesterday on a F650GS. It was a fuel injected model. He said he
got 70 mpg. What do you think ? Is that about right ? Wonder what klr
mileage would be if we had fuel injection.

Most of the F650GS folks that I've talked to say that they get
anywhere from 55mpg to 75mpg, depending on how they ride. 70mpg sounds
about right for cruising at 60-65mph in the flat.
Yeah, the KLR650 would get better gas mileage if it was fuel injected.
And had dual spark plugs. And a better-flowing head. And I'd be richer
if I had a million dollars. Which I don't. Sigh.

I recall James Doohan's lilting brogue as if it were yesterday:
"Aye, and if my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a wagon.."

Just Curious,
Talked with some guys last Sunday at a riders meeting. Excellent fuel
economy with the F650 was mentioned. I'm guessing here but I suppose the
70 mpg is fine. The guy talking last Sunday mentioned 75 mpg.

So that would be $0.065 vs. $0.045 per mile in fuel cost. So if my
math is correct considering the higher initial cost of the BMW you
would break even after 157,895 miles.

Even more true in the cage world. So you buy a Toyota Prius - what do they
cost out the door, $30,000 ? Even if you're driving an old Suburban and
getting 10 mpg, it would take a while to get that back. For many of you
however - Cal Stu, Jud and Ron C to name a few - the over ridding concern is
the planet.

One thing that folks (not those mentioned above) often forget is the
environmental impact of producing a 4,000 pound car versus a 400
pound motorcycle: much less metal, plastic, rubber, energy etc. goes
into making a motorcycle, even if you're comparing it with 50 MPG
hybrid car. And, at the end of the vehicle's lifecycle a motorcycle
contains both fewer hazardous materials to handle and more recyclable
materials as a percentage of total composition.
I'm most emphatically not a Green, but I do get a good snicker at
seeing a Prius festooned with "save the planet" stickers as I ride
past on my KLR.
