I've had the same desire, but mostly related to balance issues when
standing on the pegs. One limitation on allowable setback is the location
of other parts of the frame. (For simple solutions, anyway.) I bought an
extra set of peg brackets off of Ebay, and was able to cut off the pivot
boxes, move them back a half inch, and reweld. This seemed to help a bit,
but I haven't had a chance to do extensive testing. I didn't want to take
them through Death Valley Daze in case they developed a problem, and
haven't had time to put long miles on them locally.
One thing I'm concerned about is the redistribution of forces on the
footpeg bolts. Moving the footpeg back places more weight onto the rear
bolt, so any significant relocation is going to require additional
anchoring.

Here's a link to a thread for footpeg relocation. This gentleman is
fabricating brackets to move the pegs down about 1 1/2 inches and back
about 2 1/2 inches. He is offering them for $50. Looks interesting.
At only 6 feet tall, I still have trouble standing up much off road.
Anybody have any advice on taller bars, what brand part #, etc?

Thanks for the post...
Looks like he is getting ready to build a bunch; I put
a request in for 2 sets.

The KLR is a big, tall, heavy beast compared to the dirtbikes you may
have ridden years ago. It is probably a good investment to take the
MSF safety course, even if you feel that you're not "really" a
beginner. Riding on the street isn't the same as riding in the dirt,
and takes a few adjustments in your mentality (e.g., on the street you
basically can't grab too much front brake on the KLR with the weak
stock brake, on dirt you want to avoid vigorous application of the
front brake because it'll make your front end wash out).

There is a guy on the ADVrider site making footpeg mods. As far as I know,
they have zero test miles on them as of right now, but here it is:
