reusing old magneto bolt

When replacing your doohickeys, who has replaced the rotor/magneto bolt and who hasn't? Does anyone know of any old bolt problems or is Kawasaki's "recommendation" to replace it just a money-making scam. $12 for a bolt... ridiculous. Also, is it worth upgrading to the post 96 adjuster bolt and washer? Thanks, Mike

<><><><><> <><><><><> Mike, I haven't put a new rotor bolt in a KLR when doing the doohickey for almost two hours. : ) We're having Black Hills KLR Tech Day tomorrow and one guy showed this evening to get a jump on things. He only lives 350 miles from here. I suggest if you can afford the bolt you put a new one in. If you can't afford a new bolt try threading in the old bolt and seeing if the threads are distorted or if it's tight. If the threads are distorted or it's tight the bolt has probably stretched and I think it would be a good idea to replace it. I think two years ago I asked a similar question about reusing the rotor bolt and failures and I can't remember anyone having had a problem. Reused once sofar, will be twice whenever I get the cover off again to see how the spring is doing, have a shorter one should the case happen. Dunno about the post upgrade however. Dooden A15 Green Ape

can carb float setting cause bike to run lean?

my 94'klr 650 has a new plastic tank, new fuel pet-cock and was cold starting and running fine when i put it in the garage for about 8 weeks.I get back from my trip, she fires right up,runs for about 3 mins and dies.Ipull the fuel line and crank, plenty of fuel.Nice big spark.huh.So I figure the float got stuck up and the bike ran on what was in the boal and died.Awesome,so I pulled the carb, cleaned it,nothing to nasty, anywhere, didnt mess with any settings, the float seemed to be freed up...sweet.Iput it all back together and the bike seems to be fine so I was right about the stuck float...but.the idle is now all over the place and its backfiring like a two stroke on deceleration..and running a bit hot.I figure its gone to running lean somehow. An air leak somewhere right?so i saturate the intake with quickstart while running and it pulls a little bit in.so I tighten everything, make sure the carbs seated right.still the wandering idle and backfireing.Whad I screw up?how make better? (so about the long story but you got all the facts i think) Thanks to anyone for any help they can offer S.
