Out riding Sat night and had loss of power. At first I thought, switch to reserve, nope. Power loss got worse, engine died. Re-started got back on the road and noticed a loud clanking noise, power still was coming and going, noise getting worse. I ended up leaving the bike and coming back for it with the trailer. If the Doohickey goes, what happens? The noise seems to be coming from the top end of the bike, I wish I could explain what it sounded like, and it could be the piston hitting the valves and the chain being loose/broken in there? At any rate it seems that something has broken in there and I could use some advice. I am not sure where to start with this. I have also posted this question to my local KLR group hoping I can have someone listen to the sounds and perhaps then point me in the right direction, or maybe I just need to start taking the engine apart until I find all the brooken bits.

With a loud clanking noise I would not run the motor any further! Since you said the sound seems to be coming from the top, I'd take off the cam cover and see what I can see. Check the cam chain to see if it has good tension, the motor can be turned by hand without interference, etc. If you haven't replaced your doohickey I'd take off the left side engine covers and inspect that as well. -- Blake Sobiloff http://sobiloff.typepad.com/> San Jose, CA (USA)

The sounds mine made after the lever crash, brought tears to my eyes. The vibration was intense and the crackin sound was wild on accelleration. No way I could try to see how much power the bike had. HHHAAAAAARRRR!!!!! I limped home to order Mike's parts from Fred without tearin it down, wishin I'd payed attention before 20,000 miles.
