Hi all. I found this mysterious circlip sitting on
the ground as I cleaned up this afternoon--all I did
was tighten the chain a touch and put a new rivet
masterlink on (after throwing the retaining clip a
second time). I didn't have the wheel off or the
chain off. I also turned the preload down to 1 so I
could compress the suspension to see about the chain
tension, but this isn't the little circlip on the
preload adjust... that's still there. I had the shock
out a couple days ago, but I've swept the garage
pretty well since and I'd be surprised if it managed
to escape the broom. The pic's a touch blurry b/c of
my crappy camera, but I think it's sufficient.
I scanned it and it's here.

It might be nothing, but I'd hate to have the brake
fall off or something. I don't recognize it at all.
Thanks for any thoughts.

Check this right away! It looks like the e-clip from the pin that
holds the front footpeg(s) on the bracket. Definitely important if
that's the case. They are cheap at the hardware store, I carry an extra.

Charles,
Awesome call. I took a look and couldn't remember where I'd seen them
before on the KLR. Wouldn't it bite to have a footpeg fall off while on
a ride?

Wow, guys, impressive... but wrong. I went down and
looked and while this little clip DOES look identical
to the ones holding on the footpeg pin, both of the
footpegs have their pins and clips intact.
Other ideas?

Luke,
Did you use a chain breaker or press? Did the E clip come off of it?

Both of the footpegs? There are FOUR foot pegs on my bike, not two. Are
the rear footpeg e-clips in place?

Nope, rear footpegs (at least on my bike) have
conventional cotter pins. I did 300 miles yesterday
including almost 90 miles in the woods, and nothing
fell off (that I noticed) but I'd still love to
identify this little guy.

How about the circlip on the preload adjusting bolt itself? I just
adjusted mine, and noticed the circlip there. If you have the Clymer
manual, page 269 shows it not one, not twice, but THREE TIMES in
photos. I don't know for sure the purpose of it, but maybe to hold
the bolt itself in place?
